SIR PHILIP STREET DEAD

LIEUTENANT-GOVERNOR OF NEW SOUTH WALES

SYDNEY, September 11,

The death has occurred of Sir Philip Street, Lieutenant-Governor of New South Wales since 1930.

■ Sir Philip Whistler Street was born at Darlinghurst, Sydney, on August 9 1863, and- was educated at the Sydney Grammar School and the University of Sydney, where he graduated B.A. He was called to the Bar of New

South Wales in 1886, was appointed a puisne judge qf the Supreme Court of New South Wales in 1907. made a judge in bankruptcy the same year, chief judge in equity in 1918, and was Chief Justice of New South Wales from 1925 to 1934, when he retired. Sir Philip was a member of the senate of the University of Sydney from 1915 to 1934, and deputy-chancellor in 1926 and 1927. He was chairman of trustees of the Sydney Grammar School from 1912 to 1929, a trustee of the National Art Gallery of New South Wales from 1923 and president from 1934, and was alsc American non-national member of the International Commission of 1933. provided for by treaty between the United States of America and Greece for the settlement of disputed questions. Sir Philip was created K.C.M.G. in 1928 and was appointed Lieutenant-Gover-nor of New South Wales in 1930. He was also made a Knight of Grace of' the Order of St. John of Jerusalem in the same year. One of his sons is a judge of the Supreme Court of New South Wales.
