CHALLENGE BY STALIN
“Soviet Will Prevent War”
PEACE BY ARMED MIGHT Interview in London Newspaper (UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION —COPTSIOnT.) (Received September 12, 1 a.m.) LONDON, September 11. The “Sunday Chronicle” says M. Stalin, in an interview, said: “War holds no terror for Russia. My country is becoming the most formidable in the world, and as long as I am responsible, it will keep to that path.
“Herr Hitler knows it. That is why he has not dared to repeat his Austrian invasion by marching into Czechoslovakia, as in so doing he would face Russia’s armed might.
“The Soviet will not fight to benefit its neighbours or competitors, but it will fight tooth and nail whenever its interests are threatened. The Soviet wants peace and will enforce it.
“We are strong enough to prevent war breaking out again, and we will prevent it.” THE ATTITUDE OF JAPAN ALOOFNESS IN EARLY STAGES REPORTED CONFERENCE IN TOKYO LONDON, September 9. The Tokyo correspondent of “The Times" slates that the German Ambassador discussed the European situation and its possible development with the Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs (Mr K. Horinouchi). It is understood he disclosed the Japanese attitude, namely aloofness in the opening phases of a European war and intervention later under certain contingencies connected with the miL.ary position and • the Russian strength.
“GERMANY WORKING
FOR PEACE” ADDRESS TO LABOUR FRONT “LAUGHABLE THREATS FROM ABROAD” (Received September 11, 11 p.m.) BERLIN, September 10. Field-Marshal Goring, addressing 30,000 members of the Labour Front, briefly referred to Czechoslovakia, declaring: “Cultureless people, coming from nobody knows where, and oppressing people of culture, is ridiculous. The pygmies themselves do not count, but behind them hide Moscow and the Jew and Marxist demons.
“Germany and Italy have not established order and peace to grasp the torch of war. It would be better if England gave fewer suggestions and established order among her Jews down there (presumably in Palestine).”
Field-Marshal Goring mocked “the laughable threats from abroad,” adding: “We have done what we could to protect Germany’s security and honour.’ The only countries in the world working for peace are Italy and Germany. It is necessary to show the world that reason governs , but should hatred govern it we are ready to follow the Fuhrer wherever he leads.”
