YOUTH HOSTELS
REVIEW OF YEAR’S ACTIVITY Visits to Banks Peninsula were made by 289 members ot the Youth Hostels Association during the last year, reservations totalling 365. During that period the hostels in Westland recorded 34 trampers, occasioning 40 reservations. The figures for the Oxford district were:—Number of. hampers, 11-, reservations, 11. The following summary also includes the 1936-37 figures in parenthesis for comparison:—Total number of parties, 81 (74); total number of persons. 334 (240); total number of reservations, 416 (572); cards issued, 269 (225). Altogether, 216 women stayed at the hostels, whilst the men totalled 118 in number. “The decrease in the reservations is regretted, but this unfortunately is partly due to the fact that some of those people who have welcomed our members in former years have had to discontinue as hosts through illhealth or for other reasons,’’ says the annual report of the association. “It is also realised that the accommodation at hostels is limited, but it is recommended that large club parties might divide forces when planning trips. There is a credit balance of £6l on the books.”
