FLYING BASE IN THE ESTUARY
TO THE EDITOR 0» TEE PRESS. Sir,—“lt does not seem that the scheme is practicable at present,” commented the president of the Canterbury Progress League (Mr T. M. Charters), when a report was submitted to the executive of -the league last night on a proposal to develop the Estuary for aquatics. Is it any wonder that the North Island get everything? Here we are, about to have large flying-boats coming from Australia in the near future. and nowhere in the South Island where they can land! Why can't the Progress League get busy and advocate dredging out of the estuary to prepare in the next year or so for an up-to-date flying-boat base, where the Australian flying-boats could land? The air base at Singapore, considered one of the best in the world, was built on a mosquito infested swamp. It cost more than £1.000.000 to build. Why cannot our Progress League get busy and procure £1.000.000 from the Labour Government, from the £21,000,000 that ’t is going to spend on public works in the next year?— Yours etc.. S. W. HICKMOTT. Sumner, September 9. 1938.
