CABINET RESHUFFLE IN SOUTH AFRICA

MINISTER AWARDED SEAT IN SENATE

CAPE TOWN, September 9,

The Minister for Mines (Mr J. H. Hofmeyr) and the Hon. F. C. Sturrock, Minister without Portfolio, have resigned, and Mr A. P. J. Fourie, formerly Minister for Commerce, has been appointed to the Senate and Cabinet. Mr Fourie was defeated at the General Election, and the Prime Minister (General Hertzog) insisted on his return to Cabinet. Attempts to find him a safe seat failed, and General Hertzog decided to nominate him as one of four Senators with a knowledge of native affairs. Mr Hofmeyr expressed the opinion that this was a breach of constitutional practice. The sitting Senator, however, has resigned to make way for Mr Fourie.
