RANGIORA PERSONAL Mr A. Buckingham, engineer-secre-tary to the North Canterbury Electric Power Board, is at present on his annual holiday. Mr W. Stalker, chairman of the Rangiora County Council, and Mr H. Tallott, a member of the council, will represent the council at a conference of representatives of local bodies called by the Christchurch City Council to-morrow to discuss further the allocation of heavy traffic fees in the No. 14 district of the Main Highways Board. The Rangiora Borough Council will be represented by Cr. C. W. Tyler, chairman of the finance committee ot the council, and Mr J. M. Fraser, town clerk. Municipal Water Supply The level of the water in the Rangiora borough well is now nine feet seven and a half inches, which is five feet above its lowest level this season. During the last few days the well has risen nearly a foot. The water in the well is still rising slowly. Ministers' Association The newly-formed Rangiora Ministers' Association met yesterday afternoon, at the Methodist There were present Archdeacon A. C. Purchas (Rangiora), president, and the Revs. E. Maiden (Amberley), R. Taylor (Sefton), H. Ford (Woodend). F. O. B. Lane (Rangiora), W. H. A. Vickery (Kaiapoi), J. A. F. Watson (Rangiora), and T. Coatsworth (Rangiora). Archdeacon Purchas gave an address on the Kingdom of God and its opponents, at the conclusion of which a vote of thanks was passed. Afternoon tea was afterwards served by the hostess, Mrs T. Coatsworth. Unemployment Executive The executive of the local unemployment committee met yesterday. Present: Messrs W. A. Rowse (chairman), J. R. Wilkinson, S. G. Dalley, C. S. Ayers, G. E. H. Davis (certifying officer), and H. M. Chappell (secretary) . The Unemployment Board wrote agreeing to a worker who had attained the age for the old age pension remaining on the fund, and also to the reclassification of a worker on account of his dependants. Four registrations were received. Workers* Educational Association The annual meeting of the Rangiora branch of the Workers' Educational Association was held last evening, Mr E. W. Whitworth presiding. The annual report stated that 70 students attended the lectures and 60 had become financial members. The class met on 27 evenings from April to September. Experimental psychology occupied 12 nights, and music and literature 11 nights. The management committee met on three occasions during the year. Regret was expressed at the departure from the district of Mr and Mrs S. T. Seward who had been members for many years. The class was particularly grateful to the valuable leadership of the Rev. J. A. F. Watson. A grant of £5 5s had been made to the United Club for the use of its pavilion. The balance-sheet showed that the credit balance brought forward from last year was £2 Cs lid, while the .year ended with a credit of JL2 9s 3d. Income, totalled £ll 16s lid, of which membership fees amounted to £7 10s. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. The following officers were elected: —Patron, the Mayor of Rangiora, Mr W. A. Rowse; president, Mr N. Goldsbury; vice-president, Mr P. C. Farris; honorary vice-presidents, Mesdames M. A. Lane, A. Hughes, the Rev. J. A. F. Watson. Dr. T. A. Will, Messrs O. Duff, J. E. Strachan, and R. Ball; secretary, Mr K. Taylor; treasurer, Mr E. W. Whitworth; management committee, Mesdames A. Hughes, H. R. Taylor, C. Ironsides, Miss E. G. McDonald, Messrs R. H. Ellis, O. D. Cruickshanks, T. May, Hargreaves, D. A. Campbell; social committee, Mesdames Hughes, Ellis, Taylor, E. Payne, H. T. Wilson, Miss Hammond, and MiMay; auditor, Mr A. M. Hall. A vote of thanks was passed to the retiring secretary, Mr R. H. Ellis. It was decided to hold economic classes to begin immediately after Easter. Mr P. Campbell, of Christchurch, who was present, was appointed tutor. It was reported that Mr F. A. Shurrock would give a public lecture on art on the first Saturday after Easter. A. debate on the subject "That the Workers' Educational Association is justifying its existence" was afterwards held. The affirmative was taken by Messrs R. H. Ellis and A. Wells Newton, and the negative by Messrs N. Goldsbury and E. W. Whitworth. The judge, Mr G. Manning, secretary to the Canterbury division of the association, gave his decision, in favour of the negative by 11 points. Sports Club A decision to hold a carnival to raise funds for the club on April 6 was made at a meeting of delegates of the various sections of the United Bowling, Croquet, and Tennis Club last evening, when the president, Mr H. A. Bennett, presided. The delegates reported that their sections were willing to hold tournaments and competitions during 'the afternoon. North Canterbury Football Club The fifty-eighth annual meeting of| the North Canterbury Football Club (Rangiora) was held last evening, the president, Mr L. Hawkins, presiding. The annual report stated that teams had been entered in the following Canterbury Rugby Union's competitions: —Second grade, fifth grade, under 18 grade, and under 16 grade, but it was eventually found necessary to withdraw the fifth grade team through a shortage of players. The Helmore Cup was won by the under 18 team, which was runner-up in its competition. The annual match for the Mcln-, tosh Shield between Rangiora and Kaiapoi was won by Rangiora. Members still showed an apathy towards training, although there had been an improvement in the attendances at practice. The annual dance had been held on Labour Day night, and had been very successful, the net profit being £l4 19s 9d. Five players drew on the fund last season, the total amount being £3O. The balance-sheet showed that there was a credit balance of £ls 4s 3d. Subscriptions for the year totalled £l2 19s 6d. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. ROTHERHAM The monthly meeting of the Rotherham School Committee was held last week. After the ordinary business it was decided to hold a children's fancy dress dance in aid of school funds. The dance will be held on March 29. All children will be admitted free, and every child below school age will receive a gift. The Waiau band will play the music. ! A general meeting of the Rotherham ' Tennis Club was held in the Rotheri ham Hall last evening. Mr Gibb presided. It was decided not to hold the usual sports this month, but to hold a dance instead on March 20. The resignation of the club president, the Rev. E. B. Moore, was received. the peaks There was a fair attendance at the hall, when the social season was opened with a euchre party and dance. The competition for a silver cup, presented by Miss C. Crean, for the player gaining most points during the season, was begun. Prizes for the euchre were won as follows: —Ladies, Miss E. Crean, gentlemen, Mr H. Gray. Consolation prizes were won by Miss H. Kennedy and Mr Noonan. Dancing was held later in the evening, the music being olayed by Mrs H. E. Fincham and Mrs S. Ginders, of Medbury. Mr Robert Manning was master of ceremonies. OMIHI The combined annual picnic of the Omihi and Waipara Sunday Schools was held on Saturday at the Leithfield Beach. The weather was fine and warm and an enjoyable day was spent by the large number of parents and friends present. CHEVIOT The Anzac Day address at Cheviot this year will be given by Dr. F. Birkinshaw. The invitation to deliver the address was made to Dr. Birkinshaw by the Cheviot branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association. ASHLEY BANK I The annual harvest thanksgiving service was held in St. Simon and St. Jude's Anglican Church on Sunday evening. The Rev. F. O. Lane preached to a large congregation, and the church had been decorated by the congregation. The produce has been packed and forwarded to St. Saviour's Orphanage. STYX A successful garden party in aid of the Styx Presbyterian Church was held recently in the manse grounds. The following were the stallholders: Variely, Mesdames Dixon and Halstead; cakes, Mrs Marwick and Miss Preston; produce, Messrs Dixon, Donaldson, Cudworth, and Barnes; sweets, senior girls' Bible class; afternoon tea, Mesdames Thompson. Duke, Cudworth, and Barnes; ice cream, Mr F. Ford and Mr Haldane Campbell. The monthly meeting of the Ladies' Guild and Missionary Union was held last week. Mrs Farrar presided and welcomed Mrs 'Jennings, who gave a report on the recent conference. Votes of thanks were passed to Mrs Jennings. BELFAST Harvest festival services were held on Sunday by the Belfast Methodist Church. The church was decorated with grain, vegetables, and flowers. Mr Dalley officiated, and special music and hymns were rendered by the choir. Mrs Liiley played the organ. The harvest festival service of the Coiitt.s Island Church .were held on Sunday afternuon. The service was a combined Anglican and Methodist one. the Rev. Canon H. O. T. Hanby officiating, assisted by Mr Dalley, of the Methcdist Church. Miss Ivy Dalley played the organ. Gifts of produce were given to the Anglican and Methodist orphanages. A service was also held at Ouruhia by Mr Dalley. Special hymns were sung by the children, who "had been prepared by Mrs H. Dawber, who was organist. Gifts of produce will be sent to the Methodist Orphanage. A successful bring and buy was held in the Belfast Methodist Church on Monday afternoon, and afternoon tea was served by the members of the ladies' guild.
DARFIELI) A harvest festival service was conducted by the Rev. T. Paterson at the Presbyterian Church on Sunday morning. The church was decorated for the occasion, and there was a large attendance. On Saturday afternoon friendly bowling matches were played on the Darfield green against rinks from the Imperial (Christchurch) Club. The following were the results (Imperial names first): —-Wornall 26, Bushell 22; Fuldseth 25, Clarke 18; Clark 16, Porteous 21; Housen 22, Robb 19. HORORATA There were present at a meeting of the Hororata Horticultural Societyheld in the hall: Mr A. J. Harris (in the chair), Miss Hall (secretary), Mesdames S. Gibson, R. Gray, Misses E. Gray and M. Fuller, and Mr E. Adams. It was decided to hold a fancy dress ball on the last Friday in April. On Sunday the harvest thanksgiving service will be conducted by the vicar, the Rev. L. N. Watkins, at 11 a.m. in St. John's Church. A harvest thanksgiving service will be held in the Presbyterian Church at 3 p.m. on March 16. Mr Bruce Hamilton, of Christchurch, will conduct the service. Mrs Bloom, Heathcote Valley, visited her daughter, Mrs H. A. Oliver, during the week-end. Mr James Wells, of Lyttelton, who was 93 last Saturday, visited relatives in Hororata during the week-end, when a photograph of the five generations was taken. DUNSANDEL On Saturday the Dunsandel Golf Club held a successful dance in the Town Hall. Music was played by Owen's Band, Leeston, and an extra was played by Miss G. Walker. Messrs A. Couch and W. Gardiner acted as masters of ceremonies. The Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss W. Mackie and Mr H. Swanson. Progressive euchre was also played in the the supper room, prize-winners being Mrs Forster and Mr E. Bowden. On Saturday the Dunsandel Bowling Club completed the rinks championship. The final result was: A. Mcßae, R. J. Caldwell, O. J. Gardiner, H. A Brown 20; A. E. Withell, D. Macpherson, John Walker, J. Boag 15. A team from the Para Rubber Compai. visited Dunsandel on Saturday. Dunsandel batted first and made 210 (L. Johnson 31. B. Shipley 94. K. Johnston 14, H. Skinner 35). The Para Rubber Company replied with 92 (J. Power 24, J. Lamb 14). Bowling for the Para Rubber Company E. McJarrow took five wickets for 41 runs, J. M. Scoon two for 32, J. Power two for 55, and J. Lamb six for 40. For Dunsandel E. Pocock took four for 21, H. Skinner one for 29, L. Johnson two for five, and J. Rpbb two for 0. Mr G. W. Kime, "The Bungalow," Dunsandel, left on Friday to spend a holiday at Pleasant Point. Mr and Mrs James Aldridge, "Englefield." Dunsandel, are on holiday in North Canterbury. Mr and Mrs A. J. Sheet and Mr and Mrs N. Walker are spending a holiday in Sumner with Mrs W. Owers, of Methven. Mr and Mrs A. J. Sheat will take up residence in'their new house on their return from Sumner.
