Wellington was in a strong position when the first clay's play in the annual junior representative contest match between Wellington and Canterbury for the Brabin Shield was concluded at the Basin Reserve to-day. The home side batted first, and declared at 4 p.m. with a score of 321 for nine wickets. Canterbury in the first innings had lost seven wickets for 99 runs at stumps. The Brabin Shield has been competed for by the two provinces for 10 years. Wellington held the trophy for the first five seasons, and Canterbury, the present holder, has held it for five seasons also. The chief features of Wellington's innings was a century (101) by one of the opening batsmen, K. Young. He and J. Potier gave the side a good start, putting on 73 runs before the latter was dismissed for 45. Young saw the total reach 227 before he was dismissed, his score including eight fours. The Wellington batsmen continued in good style, G. Howe registering a forceful 54 not out to enliven the later stages of the innings. H. S. McCann (two for 37) and K. W. Truscott (two for 64) were the most successful Canterbury bowlers, the honours being very evenly shared. The visitors opened disastrously, two wickets falling for four runs, Potier dismissing P. J. Byrne and B. W. Colwill before they opei.ed their accounts. R. E. Menzies (24) improved the position somewhat, and K. W. Truscott and L. Shand took the total to 99.
