COUNCILLOR LEAVES CHAMBER
WORDING OF AN AMENDMENT DISPUTED Several acrimonious discussions at a meeting of the New Brighton Borough Council last evening had their climax in the indignant retirement of Cr. J. S. Ainsworth towards the end of the meeting. The Mayor (Mr E. A. M. Leaver 1 frequently has an embarrassing number of amendments to motions put before him, and the recording of them oflen occupies a considerable amount of the council's time. Last -verting Cr. Ainsworth moved an amendment to a motion, and was later informed by the Mayor that it had not been seconded. A seconder was found, but when the amendment was put Cr. Ainsworth contended that the Mayor had given the text of it wrongly. The Town Clerk (Mr C. T. Middleton) then complained that in fairness lo him councillors should be moi" definite in stating their motions an<: amendments. Cr. Ainsworth then indignantly and left, the chamber with the remark. ""Excuse me, I'm off." Later the Mayor suggestea tba' motions brought before the council should be put in writing wherever possible, so that the customary delays in the business of the council might be avoided. He said that he did not like the way in which Cr. Ainsworth had abruptly retired from the meeting.
