MAYOR TO SEEK RE-ELECTION SEVERAL yj. DUBIOUS (SPECIAL TO THE PRE3S.I NELSON, March 11. With the approach of the municipal elections, increasing interest is being Taken in the prospective candidates. It is understood that the Mayor, Mr W J. Moft'att, is seeking re-election and that Crs. H. E. A. Washbourn, G. p. Russell, and W. Black have expressed their intention to seek re-election to the council. Cr. E. R. Neale has said that he would most probably stand, while Crs. G. L. Page. S. A. Gibbs and S. H. Moynagh are among those who are still doubtful. Cr. R. Watson, who suffered a breakdown i n health some months ago. will retire after 20 years' sen-ice. Cr. F. W. Haggins has definitely announced that he will not seek re-election. When interviewed, he stated that for private reasons he could not offer his services again this year, but hoped again to take part in civic affairs. Many names have been mentioned as possible candidates, but the only one who can yet be said to be a definite contestant is Mr F. H. Sharland. However, there are several others who may contest the election, among them being Mr J. F. Fitzgerald, who ■stated that he would probably be a candidate. Bowls The Nelson and Maitai Bowling Club veterans played a match, each club winning with one rink. The results were: Nelson (average age 77 years), C. Moore, W. Condel!, F. Board, E. J. Wilson (s) 26, Maitai (average age 68), Hay ward. Edmonson, Brundell, Stallard is) 10; Nelson (average age 73), Lord, Stuart, Leaker, Robison (s) 13, Maitai (average age 69), Vaughan, Merlins, Bockman, Johnston (s) 23. Cricket In the senior championship cricket. Old Boys beat College, gaining the only outright win in the senior grade so far this season. Scoring on the first day was small, but the second day's was even worse. In contrast to this was the Athletic-Wakatu match at the park, where only 19 wickets fell on the two days, for about 650 runs. Twenty wickets fell at the College in one afternoon for 202 runs. Continuing with seven for 89, the College total reached 136—71 behind Old Boys. Old Boys declared with 87 for eight, leaving College 158 to get. The School team collapsed and were all out for 68. Newman and Freeman took all the wickets in both innings. Newman got eight for 70. and Freeman 10 for 87. In reply to Wakatu's total of 396 on the first., day, Athletic made 303 to nine (Delaney 57, Vass 27, Ralph 62). The match was drawn. Presentation to Retiring Employee Mr E. A. Sherwood, who was on the staff of the old Nelson firm af Sclanders and Company, and their successors, Levin and Company, for 53 years, retired on Saturday. Members of the staff met to make a presentation to Mr Sherwood. Mr P. C. Hurst, expressed wishes for his future happiness. Mr Sherwood replied. Personal Mr C. Norden, of'the Theatre Royal, will leave to-night for the north on business. Swimming A number of centre and club championships were decided at a swimming carnival on Saturday night. \V. Gray won his third centre title for tha season by gaining first place in both the 100 and 880 yards events. The results were as follows: — 100 Yards Centre Championship—\Y. Gray (Nelson) 1. R.
