The Minister for Public Works, the Hon. J. Bitchener, arrived from Wellington on Saturday and went on to Waimate. The Hon. Sir James Allen, M.L.C., and the Hon. F. Waite, M.L.C., were passengers by the steamer express from Wellington on Saturday morning. The Mayor of Christchurch. Mr D. G. Sullivan. M.P., arrived from Wellington on Saturday morning. I Members of Parliament who arrived from the north on Saturday morning were Messrs J. W. Munro, J. O'Brien, J. Hargest, J. A. Macpherson, C. Carr, H. S. S. Kyle, and E. J. Howard. Mr H. Holland arrived yesterday morning. Mr H. McLerie. of Chicago, a director of Swift's International Company, Ltd., who is on a holiday visit to New Zealand, arrived in Christchurch on Saturday. He will remain here for a few days. Dr. C. H. Upham, of Lyttelton, who underwent an operation at St. George's Hospital on Friday, is progressing satisfactorily. Mr A. Rosser, president of the New Zealand Federation of Justices of the Peace, and Mr A. J. Stratford, registrar of the federation, arrived at Christchurch yesterday from Auckland and will go on to-day to Dunedin where the conference of the federation will be held this week. MM. Jean Taris and Charles Poussard, visiting French swimmers, arrived in Christchurch yesterday morning. During the day they visited the North Beach Surf Club. Mr H. J. Otley, chairman of the North Canterbury Hospital Board, who is seriously ill in a nursing home at Hastings, was yesterday reported to be slightly better. His son, Mr Sydney Otley, who had flown to Hastings on Friday, returned to Christchurch by aeroplane yesterday. At last night's annual meeting of the Marist Brothers' Old Boys' and Catholic Club, Mr F. Smythe was elected an honorary life member. Mr Smythe is the first life member of the club.
