FINANCES OF NEW ZEALAND
IMPROVEMENT NOTED BY MR COATES INCREASED RETURNS FROM TAXATION (PBESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) AUCKLAND, March 10. The improved condition of the national finances was referred to by the Minister for Finance, the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, at the opening of the Kumeu show. "We estimated that the budget would be balanced," he said, "and after examining the figures for the last 10 months it is clear that the revenue is continuing its upward tendency." An indication of how this year had been a better one than the previous year could be obtained from the figures for the 10 months ended January 31. In that period in 1934-35, customs duties had amounted to £6,206,000, compared with £5,370,000 in the corresponding period of 1933-34. Excise duty on beer amounted to £548,000, compared with £545,000, and sales tax £1,833,000, compared with £1,540,000. The total for Ihe 10 months was £8,587,000, against £7,455,000 during the same period in 1933-34.
"These improved returns," concluded the Minister, "have been achieved with no increases in taxation."
