YOUNG YACHTSMEN

TO Tim EDITOR OF TIT Pi PIIRKM. Sir, "His Majesty recognised that yachting in New Zealand was a democratic sport in which nearly every young man with a love of the sea could indulge," said Lord Bledisloe, speaking at a function in Auckland recently While this may be so in Auckland, I think that it does not apply to Canterbury. There are many young men in Canterbury with a love of the sea and a desire to spend their week-ends afloat. These young men have not the necessary capital to purchase a sailingboat of their own and have no kind friend with a vacancy in his c;ew. Certainly they can join the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve; but there is not the thrill of sailing on a boat of such size as the Deveron. Why could not the Cruising Club, the Christchurch Club, or the Canterbury Club have some arrangement whereby those who desire to go sailing but have no boat are put in touch with those who have no crew? Or could not some club buy a second Takapuna or Idle Along for those members who cannot afford to buy their own boat? This arrangement would be to the club's own benefit, for there are many who would .join a club which made some arrangement for ensuring that they could spend Saturday afternoon or Sunday afloat.—Yours, etc., WOULD-BE SAILOR. March 9. 1935. '
