NEW ZEALAND LILY SOCIETY

MONTHLY .MEETING The first monthly meeting of the New Zealand Lily Society, since the name was changed from that of the Lily Circle, was held at the offices of Canterbury Horticultural Society. Mr William Balch presided over a large attendance of members. Several new members were elected. The committee appointed to prepare a draft of the rules for the society presented its report and the proposed rules. These were discussed and generally approved, and will be submitted for approval and ratification at the next monthly meeting. A vote of thanks was passed to the sub-committec for the work it had done in preparing the rules, and also to Mr H. E. Ot.le.y for supplying sufficient; copies of the drafted rules for all the members. The blooms shown were mostly varieties of liliam spcciosum, including spcciosum album, roseum, Kraetzeri, rubrum, and magnificum, and also late flowering blooms of Phillipinense variety Formosanum. A short address was given on the various forms of speciosum and their cultivation. Mrs E. Ridgen, of Greendale, gave some interesting information of her visit to various growers of lilies in England and elsewhere, more particularly of her visit to the Dominion of Canada Experimental Plant Farm at Ottawa, where she met Miss Preston, the famous specialist in the cultivation and hybridisation of lilies. INSTITUTE OF HORTICULTURE The monthly meeting of the executive council of the New Zealand Institute of Horticulture was held recently, with Mr F. S. Pope in the chair. It was decided to forward a letter of thanks to the New Zealand Horticultural Trades' Association for its offer to give four silver medals for the National Show in 1936. The committee's report on a schedule of plants for the Native Plants Protection Act, 1934, was adopted for transmission to the Lands Department. Reports of the proceedings of the recent annual conference and of the action taken on remits were noted.
