GREYMOUTH borough council (SPECIAL TO THE FRFfc'S.l GREYMOUTH, March 9. At the monthly meeting of the Greymouth Borough Council it was decided to hold a special meeting on March 25 to pass the necessary resolutions for the Cobden water supply loan of £BO7I. It was decided to call upon all property owners in the reticulated areas to link up with the sewerage system. A suggestion by Cr. A H. McKane that the council go intothe question of raising a loan of L the relief of unemployment, £4OOO 10 be spent each year, was referred to the finance committee. The Department of Internal Affairs advised that, the council would have four members on the Grey Electric Power Board, conseauent on the amalgamation with Cobden. The Mayor (Mi - J. W. Greenslade) stated that the borough's representation on the Hospital Board would be five members. A suggestion from Cr. McKane that Trooper Martins memorial plate, from the demolished band rotunda, be placed on the Cenotaph, was referred to the reset ves committee and the engineer with power to act. A deputation of 11 res *~ dents of Winnie street, Kilgour road, and Perotti street waited upon the council with a request streets be tar-sealed, to abate the dust nuisance After discussion that matter was left to the works committee to confer with the engineer and with power to act immediately. A petition signed by approximately 400 ratepayers was placed before the council, objecting to the closing o Beach road, for the purpose ot the aerodrome. The Mayor said that all that could be done was to allow the petition to lie on the table. It was now for the magistrate to say whether, in his opinion, the objections should be upheld or not. The Mayor refused to accept a notice of motion from Ci. r. Bounstridge to the effect that all work be ceased on the aerodrome, and that the area be cut up into building sections. t , , It was decided to support a protest by the Christchurch City Council to the Prime Minister, against the State Advances Department repudiating liability for rates, and to forward copies of the City Council's letter to the Prime Minister and Mr J. O'Brien, member for Westland. Authority was received I'rom the Unemployment Board for the payment of special contract rates of wages to men employed on the aerodrome site, based on a daily wage of 12s for an average good worker. Fees collected at the municipal abattoirs last month amounted to £lO5 12s Bd. The following stock was examined during the month: Cows 12, bullocks 132 (condemned 1), sheep 492. lambs 224, pigs 4, calves 34. Mr G. Cottle, of Marsden road, offered an area of 10 acres of virgin bush, off Marsden road, to the council as a park. It was decided that Ihc offer be accepted, and lhat a letter of thanks be sent to Mr Cottle. Cr. R. J. Williams suggested that the area be named Cottle Park. An application was received from the J. C. Williamson Picture Corporation, Ltd., Greymoutli, for permission to screen pictures in the Regent Theatre on Good Friday. On the motion of. Crs. C. Neville and J. McGinley permission was refused. The Mayor said that the principle in the past had been to allow pictures to be screened. Grey County Council At the monthly meeting of the Grcv County Council'the treasurer <Mr M. Keating) submitted a statement showing that the receipts for the year up to February 28 w/:e £49,977 18s Bd, the annual estimate being £56,338. Gibbs Motors, Ltd., wrote asking for permission to exceed the four and a half tons classification of the Grey-mouth-Westport coastal road. It was stated that they wished to put a 14passenger bus on the • road, which would be about five tons fully loaded. It was decided to recommend to the Main Highways Board that the permit be granted. Mr P. C. Webb, M.P.. advised that the Public Works Department intend making an early start with the Brun-ner-Blackball road. A petition was received from residents of Ahaura asking the council to tar seal the highway through the township to abate the dust nuisance. It was decided that the request be held over until information was received from the Highways Board as to the amount of grant to be made for sealing work. Person.. 1 Mr and Mrs R. Bay ley, son of Mr and I\li's F, Bayley, has received an appoinlment on the clerical stall of the Railway Department, Dunedin. Mr J. Guerin, who was unlil recently caretaker of the Omoto racecourse, was met by a number of owners and trainers and presented with a silvermounted pipe in appreciation ot his assistance during the last six and a half years. The presentation was made by Mr W. Ruthven, and Mr Guerin suitably replied. Mrs L. Ford, who has resigned from the staff of the "Grey River Argus," was met yesterday by the staff. A presentation of a silver powder compact was made by the, manager (Mr L. V. Lovell). Occasion was also taken to welcome Mrs Ford's successor, Mr H. Mathieson. Mr J. O'Brien, M.P.. arrived to-day from Wellington. Mr A. Tennent, of Wellington, arrived to-day on a visit to relatives. Bankrupt Cabinet Maker A meeting of creditors of Richard Seymour Tunnagc. cabinet maker, of Cobden, who filed hi. petition in bankruptcy on February lit!, was held yesterday at the office of the DeptilyOffieial Assignee (Mr A. Naylor). Bankrupt's statement of his affairs showed unsecured creditors at £645 19s 6d, and secured creditors £738. His total assets were shown at £6'G7 0s Id. In his statement bankrupt attributed his failure to the business depression, and to a threatened sale by his landlord affecting his business. The total estimated value of securities was shown at £875, and a total indebtedness of £893 16s lid. Bankrupt was examined at length by Mr A. M. Jamleson (representing the Omoto Sawmilling Company) and Mr M. James (representing Mrs H. E. Uddstrom). at the conclusion of which the. deputy-oflicial assignee remarked that, it appeared that the book debts, estimated 1 o produce £2OO. would provide the only assets available for creditors. The meeting was then adjourned sine die. Grey Main School Mr R. A. Barrowman presided over a special meeting of the Grey Main School last evening. From five applicants Miss' A. E. Shorland was appointed assistant mistress, to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Mrs R. Rollinson. Miss Shorland, who had the highest grading of the applicants, is at present stationed at Camerons. The headmaster (Mr J. Graham) reported, that the total roll at the main school was 519 and at Blaketown 90. The average attendances were 483 and 81.2. _ Advice had been received from the District Public Trustee that, subject to the age regu-

Export Figures Decline During the four-weekly period ended Maroii. .2 coal exported from the port of Greymouth totalled 11,431 tons, as compared with 13,238 tons during the corresponding period of last year, a decrease of 1807 tons. During the same period limber exported amounted to 1.710.703 super feet, as compared with 2,257.445. super feet during the corresponding period of last year, a decrease of 546,732 super feet. HOKITIKA MUSICAL SOCIETY (SfECIAL TO THE TIVESS. I HOKITIKA. March 9. At a meeting of the committee of the newly-formed Hokitika Musical Society, arrangements were made for the first recital, to be given next month by Messrs Ernest Jenner and Frederick Bullock. It was also decided to hold an evening of music among members and friends on March 22. Transfer of Hotel License Mr A. H. Nancekivell, who has disposed of his interest in the Railway Hotel, Hokitika, is leaving next week with Mrs Nancekivell for Australia. The license has been taken over by Mr J. R. Taylor, of Granity. Harbour Board The Hokitika Harbour Board is again considering the question of river diversion and an inspection of the river has been made by members. Football • The annual meeting of Ih* Pirates Rugby Football Club was presided over by Mr A. H. Lawn, who congratulated the club on its excellent showing last season. The Reefton Aero Club has received several offers of land for an aerodrome in Reefton. These will be submitted to the Public Works Engineer, who will report on them. School of Mines Mr James Patterson presided over the monthly meeting of the Reefton School of Mines. The director reported that classes had been begun and that 31. students had enrolled. The following assay work had been done: —Gold and silver assays 518, bullion 3, coal dust 3, coal analysis and sulphur 1. During the .month a streaming down table had been constructed. The director was instructed to write to the Thames School of Mines enquiring their cost of treating samples of quartz. Personal Mrs Staples and Miss Molloy.
