+ | RANGIORA | ; PERSONAL i ; Adjutant J. Tyson, of the Christchurch Salvation Army corps, conducted the services at the Salvation Army yesterday. Ilelp for Crippled Children The Mayor of Rangiora (Mr W. A. Rowse) received a telegram on Saturday morning from Mr C. J. Norwood, ol' Auckland, stating that a Dominionwide appeal was being made to help the crippled children of New Zealand, and requesting that a subscription list be opened at Rangiora for the purpose. Mr Rowse stated that the matter would be placed before the Borough Council at its meeting on Friday. Anglican Church Finances In a statement issued with the latest issue of the St. John's Anglican Parish Magazine, the church vestrymen state that in the general church account at the end of February there was a debit of £67 16s Id. It was the usual custom to endeavour to have at least £SO in hand to carry on the work for the first two or three months of the new financial year, which begins on April 1, so with the estimated debit the sum of £l5O was required to clear the accounts for the next few months. The vestrymen acknowledged receipt of the gift of £lO towards the finding of this sum. Band Concert An open air concert was given by the Rangiora Silver Band, under the baton of bandmaster H. T. Oates, on the rotunda on Victoria Park last evening. There was a good attendance of the public. The following items were included in the programme:—Marches, "Round the Town" and "Punchenello"; selections, "Zampa" and "Martha"; fantasia, "Pleasant Memories" and "Woodland Whispers"; song hit, "Sing to Me Gipsy." Tennis The final of the women's singles championship of the Rangiora Tennis Club was played on Saturday afternoon between Misses B. and M. Kennedy. Miss B. Kennedy, who won the title last year, successfully defended it, winning the match in two straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. This is the third year in succession that Miss B. Kennedy has been the winner. The match was fought from the baseline, the winner's driving being a little more agressive and steady than that of her sister. Bowls Fourteen pairs took part in a friendly bowl on Saturday between players residing on the east and west side of the borough, taking King street as the boundary. Twenty one heads were played, west winning by six games to one.

Hirst in support of the summer queen in the Kaiapoi Beautifying Association's queen carnival contest, was held in the Orange Hall, Kaiapoi, on iSSturday afternoon. More than 100 children were present in fancy costume. Music for the grand march and dancing was played by Mrs S. J. Richards The judges, Mrs W. A. Martyn and Miss G. Martyn, awarded prizes as follows: —Best dressed girl. Dawn iPrice (bride); most original girl, Una ! Baylis (Kaiapoi wool); best dressed (boy, Max Busby (Indian); most original boy. Bert Barnard (Mickey Mouse). Special prizes, Jean Richards (Egyptian), Ron Richards (pirate), Anne Corcoran and Russell Smith (Cossacks), Stanley Pearce (Sun paper), Joan Thompson (Swiss milkmaid). Nareen Barnard and Iris McGarry (ballet girls, 1935). f CHEVIOT A meeting of the committee of the Cheviot Sports Club was held in the Cheviot Hall on Friday night. The president, Mr A. S. Murray, presided. The secretary reported on the financial position of the club after the January sports and the* position was considered very satisfactory. The president referred to the approaching departure from the district of Mr A. B. Cockerell. For some years Mr Cockerell ..had been secretary to the club, and only ill-health forced him to resign. SOUTHBRQOK On Wednesday evening the Southbrook School Committee held its monthly meeting. Mr A. Heald was selected to fill the vacancy on the committee caused by the resignation of Mr Bowler, who has left the district. A final meeting of the committee which held the school picnic and reunion took place on Wednesday evening, when the financial affairs were wound up. At a well attended meeting of the swimming club, held on Thursday evening, it was decided to hold an evening carnival at the baths on Thursday, March 10, at 6.15 p.m. The Phillipstown Club have accepted an invitation to a carnival to be held on the afternoon of Saturday, March 16. The weekly euchre tournament and dance were held in the Southbrook Hall on Saturday night, all the arrangements being in the hands of the croquet club. Music was played by Holland's orchestra, and the Mcnte Carlo was won by Miss Baker and Mr L. Soie. Highest points in the euchre were scored by Mrs Watkins. sen., and Miss Cross, and by Messrs D. Jone and F. Tilley. LEESTON Keen interest is being maintained in a queen carnival arranged to help the funds of the Leeston public school, and many social gatherings in the interests of the various queens have been planned. A large number assembled at a barn dance held in Mr J. Legg's granary, in aid of the Orange queen candidate. On Friday a cake and produce stall was conducted v at Leeston for the East Ward queen, and a satisfactory sum was raised.

MARSHLAND Mr and Mrs Lockhead (Mount Somers) are the guests of Mr and Mrs R. H. Monk. Mrs E. Kiesanowski has returned from a holiday to the North Island. KILLINCHY The annual harvest home social was held at the Killinchy Hall recently. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss Hill and Mr McEvedy. Dance music was played by the Eden brothers and Owens brothers. The most successful players in a card tournament were Mrs A. Allen and Mr J. Thompson. SHEFFIELD On Thursday afternoon a very successful bring and buy sale, organised by the members of the Ladies' Guild, was held at the Waddington Methodist Church to augment the circuit funds. Cake and produce stalls were held, and afternoon tea was served. It is hoped to realise £l4. Mr W. E. Rodgers, of the railway staff, at Sheffield, has been transferred to Awakaponga (Bay of Plenty). Mr J. C. Bates, of Sumner, has been visiting his sister, Miss Molly Bates, "The Bach." Sheffield. Misses Geraldine Box and Moyna Hoben. of Christchurch, are guests of Mr and Mrs A. C. Manson, "Abner's Head," Sheffield. Miss M. Clark, Pahiatua, is visiting her cousin, Mrs E. E. Hawke, "Cairn Hill." Sheffield. AKAROA A meeting of the Akaroa Silver Band executive was held on Thursday, Mr F. R. E. Davis presiding. The Akaroa Progress Association wrote asking for the band's services during their carnival at Easter, and the request was granted. The secretary reported that the Wainui School Committee had applied for the band to play at their picnic and also to play in the evening for a dance. The band committee was empowered to make the necessary arrangements for transport.
