A .small piece of paper of momentous import to the crippled children of New Zealand changed hands in Auckland on Saturday. It was Lord Nuffield's cheque for £60,000. The gift was made by a modest benefactor whose heart had been stirred by the knowledge that in New Zealand were crippled children who, for reasons of finance, were not receiving the preparation for life's opportunities which knowledge and s'kilJ avc able lo provide. As a piece of paper, n would have been, uninteresting but for the .significant inscription: "Pay hi C. J. B. Norwood the sum of sixty thousand pounds, ' followed b. ; the magical signalure "Nuffield"; t lie last in bold handwriting, betokening a man who when lit" gives, gives unwaveringly. Drawn on "the Sydney (Martin place) branch of (he Bank of Australasia, the cheque was dated "March 9." The sum of LOO,OOO comprises two amounts given by Lord Nuffield. ]le announced the first gift, of £50.000 at a dinner given in his honour at Wellington last Monday night by Mr C. J. B. Norwood, chairman of directors of Dominion Motors, Ltd. The method of applying this sum for the benefit of crippled children was left to Mr Norwood. The second gift of £IO,OOO was made by Lord Nuffield at a luncheon in Auckland on Friday, after an announcement that Mr and Mrs W. R. Wilson had offered to present their home, "St. Leonards,''' Takapuna. with its 33 acres of ground, for a crippled children's home, subject to the creation of an endowment. The £IO,OOO was given to form a nucleus of a Dominion endowment fund. Lord Nuffield sailed from Auckland for Suva on Saturday afternoon after five busy days in New Zealand. He will stay in Fiji for a i-hort while, hut no definite arrangements have been made as to his subsequent movements. When the motor-car conveying Lord Nuffield and his party reached the wharf no nne in the crowd, assembled at the chip's side, seemed aware - that the youthful-looking man who alighted with a plain wooden pipe in his teeth was the millionaire philanthropist. Unobtrusively, the .slim figure of Lord Nuffield, clad in a dark blue suit and a grey hr.t. hurried through the crowd nnd up 'he gangway.
