NEW BRIGHTON NOTES
COUNCIL WORK Grading work has been done in the north part of the borough and in Estuary road and Richmond terrace, during the week. The footpaths in Tonks street have been patched with clay and covered with cinders, and parts of the Esplanade have also been cindered. The tramway bridge approaches have been repaired, and the shoulders are now being repaired with asphalt. Red Cross Society The annual meeting of the New Brighton Sub-Centre of the Red Cross Society, which was to have been held on Monday next, has been postponed. Relief Workers There arc now 190 relief workers employed by the New Brighton Borough Council, this number being 10 less than last week. Borough Elections Mr E. Smith, who will be a candidate for the Mayoralty at the forthcoming elections, is expected to return to New Brighton on Thursday, and an announcement will probably be made of those to be nominated for the council on his ticket. Mr Jas. Kelly, Jutland street, has announced that he will be a candidate for the council. Mr Kelly, standing in the Liberal interests, fought the late Sir William Fraser at a parliamentary election for Wakatipu, and was the organiser and first chairman of the Southland Farmers' Co-operative Association. Methodist Church The preachers at the harvest festival services, to be held in the Methodist Church to-morrow, will be the Rev. S. Bailey and Mr G. Barrell. Boy Scouts The committee of the New Brighton boy scouts met in the Scout House on Thursday. Captain A. P. Hopkins, V.D., was in the chair. The scoutmaster reported that good work was being done at the Friday night parades, and that the troop was represented in the guard of honour at the Christchurch railway station on the occasion of the departure of his Excellency Lord Bledisloe. The Gillwell camp had been abandoned, as there were so few entries. The boys were working well, and several had gained badges. It,was decided to hold the annual meeting on March 26. The committee are desirous of securing the services of someone able to fill the position of cub-master, which is vacant because of Mr F. J. Lawrence Scott's transfer to the North Island. Building Permits There were only four building permits issued during the month, and the total value of these was £l3l. The permits were for a dwelling in Beach road, two garages, and some additions to a house. Card Parties Mrs E. Wyatt and Mr L. W. Besiey j were the highest scorers at the whist evening, held in the bowling club | pavilion on Tuesday. The Croquet Club held its usual j bridge afternoon in the pavilion on Thursday, Mrs E. Wyatt and Miss C. Mazey being the successful competitors. The prize-winners at the weekly Thursday euchre evening, held in the District High School, were Mesdames j L. Frost, S. Smith, and C. Johnstone I (special), Bnd Messrs L. Free, I. Bernstein, and H. Lumby (special). Mr F. W. Larcombe won the competition. Bowls J. T. Bisman will represent tne New Brighton Club in the champion of champions games in Christchurch, he having defeated L. W. Besiey in the final of the local club competition. The annual inter-borough games will be played at Sumner to-day. NORTH BEACH PROGRESS LEAGUE The annual meeting of the North Beach Progress League and Beautifying Association will be held in the Memorial Hall on Tuesday evening. At the conclusion of the adoption of the annual report and election of officers a complimentary social to members and their wives will be held. The report to be presented, states that the association has been very active during the year, and has accomplished many improvements. The various representations made to the New Brighton Borough Council have always received favourable consideration and many of the requests have been granted. The proposal for the erection of baths in the Rawhiti Domain lias been decided upon and good spade work has been done by the committee. The principal event of the year has been the opening of Thomson Park and the band rotunda. North Beach Surf Club A floral dance, under the auspices of the North Beach Surf Club will be held in the Memorial Hall this evening in aid of the club's funds. The hall will be specially decorated with diffused lighting, streamers, flowers, plants, and shrubs. The music will be played by Butler's Serenaders. Life Saving Competition The Novth Beach Surf Club is holding its annual club competitions tomorrow for the following events:— Shaw Cup Handicap race round the buoy, junior event, at 10.45 a m The present holder is R. Hatchwell." The D. V. Wilson Cup, 11 a.m. junior. Four man event with resuscitation (present holder, L. Donaldson). Bellman's championship, 1 p.m., open. Ward Cup 2 p.m., three-man event. Wood Cup' 3 p.m., seven-man event. Card Evening There was a good attendance at the weekly euchre party held in the Aranui Ha.ll on Thursday evening by the Aranui Hall Committee. Mr E. Rowse was in charge. The winners were: Mrs J. Gracier, Messrs A. E. Young S. Jones, and W. Martin.
