RETURNED SOLDIERS' ASSOCIATION A general meeting of the Papanui branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association was held in the Memorial Hall on Monday, Mr A. E. Haynes presiding over a good attendance. The chairman outlined the activities of the branch. He said that at Christmas 33 hampers had been given out to returned men who were in difficulties, and the branch had also helped members who were sick, and assisted several in t!rj;i' pensions. The social, function had been successful. Mr Haynes stated that although the headquarters of the branch were located at Papanui. the districts of Harewood, Styx, Belfast, and Marshland were included. It was decided to adjourn the meeting until March 18. and to invite members of the Christchurch executive to attend. It was decided to nominate Mr A. E. Hayr.es for a seat on the Christchurch executive. Thanks were expressed to the Returned Soldiers' Association choir and other assisting artists for their help at a recent cor.jert, and to the women's committee, Mesdames Quirk, Armstrong, Fraser, Worsdell, Eule, and Anderson, for their assistance Cricket Club Dance A successful dance was held by the Papanui Old Boys' Cricket Club in the Northcote Hall. Music was played by Fred Com.yns's band and Mr L. Wray was master of ceremonies. The winners of the Monte Carlo were Miss Jean Sandford and Mr J. £smith.
Social Evening Mr and Mrs G. Wray, Winter's road, entertained a number of friends at a social evening on Tuesday in aid of the blue queen (Miss Betty Easter) at the forthcoming carnival for the Papanui School. A programme of social events was arranged to raise further funds and those present formed themselves into a committee to run tne stalls at the final rally. Those present were Mr and Mrs G. Wray, Mr and Mrs J. Kettle, Mr and Mrs A. Netlleton, Mr and Mrs W. R. Henderson. Mesdames H. R. Smith, Easter, and Misses E. Wray and C. Church. | Card Parties j There was a large attendance at the weekly card evening of the Advance Northcote Association on Tuesday. The winners were:—Mrs F. Comyns i, Mrs J. Munro 2, Mr J. Pope 1, Mr A. Ives 2. The Papanui Horticultural Society held a flag 500 evening at the Memorial Hall on Wednesday. There was a good attendance. At the winning table were Mesdames D. Roberts, G. Derrett. and Mr R. Good. At the count up they were equal with Mesdames W. W. Taylor, E. Biggs, and Mr D. Barnard. Two games were played before a decision was made. Methodist Ladies' Guild There was a large attendance at the Methodist Ladies' Guild on Wednesday, to say good-bye to Mrs Hopper. Mrs Haynes, who presided, spoke of
