For the convenience of North Canterbury suortsjncn a special train will leave Chnstchurch at 8.0 a.m. The fields all through are of good size and quality is well represented in the Timaru Cup and other race?. The single-pool I system of belting will be in operation I and dividends will be paid out in the I proportion oi 70, 20, and 10 on the I three placed horses. 1 The following horses should race well in their different, engagements:— i Kingsd'-'V.-n Handicap Travis J !'n'n<;l(\ lvvt i'KT, Carl. ! Washdyke Handicap—Key Spec, Eivo, Taxpayer. Tiie day's programme is as follows: —

1 - A Likcfy Improver The threc-ycar-old Chcrrill, while still inclined to race green, is a lively improver who may do a good deal better when she gains more experience. By Frank Worthy from an Our Thorpe mare, Chcrrill shows plenty of speed, and 'when more matured, she should I develop solidness and stamina, says the Auckland "Herald," which will enable her to pay her way. L. Mahoney is not hurrying the filly, as she is still growing, but she will have the benefit of further racing during the next few meetings and later may prove equal to reaching the money. i From For bury I'ark j Red Spur, the only Forbury Parktrained horse engaged at Timaru to- ' day, did a good work-out on Thursday. Starting from the mile and a half mark, Dusolina went off two and a half lengths in front of Gold Salute, with a ; length and a half to Red Spur, who drooped back to six lengths behind the leader in the middle stages. Three furlongs from home Gold Salute ran up alongside Dusolina and they were more (haii three lengths clear of Red Spur turning for home. The leading pair had a good tussle, Dusolina reaching the post first bv a neck in 3min 24 3-ssec, with Red Spur two lengths away. Speedy but Erratic Kilbirnie Dan, who was held on lease by Mr A. Ferguson and was trained at Forbury Park by B. Jarden, did not return after the Invercargill meeting. On his track work Kilbirnie Dsn appeared capable of winning good laces, but he gave some very erratic displays with the colours up. A Good Nomination For the four trotting events to be decided at the Oamaru Jockey Club's meeting on March 21 and 23 no fewer than 100 nominations have been received, an average of 25 a race. The stakes average £97 10s a race, and I with good acceptances a fine eontribu- ' (ion will have been made towards ; (lie stake money. ] Owners Help Sport The success of the Sapling Stakes in ; Goulburn has tired the local trolling ' owners and breeders to hope for some- ' Ihing similar if the Victoria Trotting > and ""Racing Association, which con- ; hols trotting in Victoria, can be ini rkiccd to stage a similar race, says a Melbourne writer. Last, week the Owners' and Breeders' Association met to consider how .. jlhe sport could be benefited, and one j I of (he proposals was that a Futurity l' I Stakes be run each, year for two-year-olds-. It was proposed that nominations be called, closing a couple of months hence, and that each nomination carry a sweepstake of £5 ss, the aggregate to be split up between the owners of the first three horses. The , suggested distance of the race was a ) mite, and the association would not be ; asked to subsidise the race unless it i thought fit to do so. However, the - Owners' and Breeders' Association has 3 committed itself, and a deputation is r to wait on the authorities to ask that > a Futurity Stakes be put on a proi gramme about March or April next • year. In view c>£ the fact that the - eU'h would not necessarily be comi milieu' lo any expenditure in (ho matter, it is considered the request will be acceded to.
