BUTTER SURPLUS DISAPPEARS
——« NOW A SHORTAGE IN CANADA REPORTED ORDER FOR .NEW ZEALAND (UNITED TRESS ASSOCIATION - —BY KLF.CTRIC TKLEGRAI'H —COPYRIGHT.; (Received March 7, 7.15 p.m.) •NEW YORK, March 6. The Ottawa correspondent of the "New York Times" says that the anticipated butter surplus of between 12,000,000 and 15,000,0001b has mysteriously disappeared according to the Agricultural Department. Although official exports to the United States in 1934 were only 75,0001b, officials are inclined to believe that much of the expected surplus was "bootlegged" across the border to meet the deficit resulting from the drought and the Roosevelt production-curtailment programme. There is now a Canadian shortage in prospect, and it is understood that a large shipment has been ordered from New Zealand. IMr C. P. Agar, a member o£ the Dairy Produce Control Board, to whom this cablegram was referred last evening, stated that so far there had been no request to the board for such a shipment noi was one expected. From the weak state of the market it would appear that no such information as that contained in the cablegram had been received in London, and no advice had been received here by exporters or by the Dairy Board. Mr Agar thought that if there was a demand for butter it would be quicker and safer to secure a shipment from London.! NOTHING KNOWN IN AUCKLAND TTHE PRESS Special Service.) AUCKLAND, March 7. Exporters of butter in Auckland to the Canadian market stated that nothing is known locally regarding the large Canadian orders for New Zealand butter.
