NEW POSTAL SCHEME
HELP FROM BUSINESS FIRMS The working of the district postal numbering scheme which was introduced by the Post and Telegraph Department to Christchurch on March 1 has been assisted to a satisfactory degree by the commercial firms of the city, according to the Chief Postmaster, Mr F. W. Furby. "It has been received in a helpful manner by the business firms," he said. Mr Furby said the department would like business firms to use the district indicator when they were having new letterheads printed, and also to encourage their typists to use the system in addressing letters for delivery in the city and suburbs. Every businessman and householder had already been informed of the postal indicator for the district in which his business or residence was situated. The designation allotted to any district could also be ascertained at any time on application to the post office. Mr Furby also spoke of the need for the public to show the appropriate postal district indicator, in addition to suburb, street, and number, as part of the address in letters. By doing so they would ensure that the correct address was placed on the replies, and this would greatly help the Post Office in the prompt sorting and delivery of correspondence. The desirability of including the postal indicator in the address of all letters posted for local delivery was also stressed.
