MONDAY NIGHT'S CARNIVAL TARIS AND POUSSARD APPEARING The outstanding event of the swimiving year will be the appearance at the Tepid Baths next Monday night of the French champions, Taris and Poussard, at a carnival promoted by the Canterbury Swimming Centre. These two swimmers recently had a triumphant tour through Australia and since their arrival in New Zealand this week have astounded North Island spectators with their performances. Taris, who has held Ave world's records, and is the present European champion, finished second to Crabbe,
of America, in the last Olympic quar-ter-mile. On Monday night, at Auckland, he broke 5 minutes for the quar-ter-mile, a feat which has never been done in New Zealand before. Poussard, who is the diving champion of Europe, won 17 European diving championships last year. When in Australia recently, he met H. Tickle twice and defeated him on both occasions, and his diving in the North Island has astounded the public. D. H. Symes, the New Zealand quarter-mile champion, will also compete, and will attempt to lower the Canterbury record in the 220 yards. Other local champions will be competing and the carnival promises to be the best held in Christchurch for some time.
