AUCTIONS. H. MATSON AND CO. consider that they get double the crop by this procedure. A few farmers have tried Ammoniated Super cross drilled at the rate of llcwt per acre with marked results, and this year, when the maximum effect is likely to be required, this practice can be recommended. One and a half cwt of Ammoniated Super cross drilled across turnip crops would give a marked stimulation of growth as soon as sufficient moisture were available. Use of Dry Feed.—There is evidence that more and more farmers are using dry feed such as chaff and hay for winter feeding of sheep in Canterbury; it has also been found that it is most important to start stock off on this type of feed before they begin to go back in condition. Whilst dry feed is excellent, still it is also most important to feed along with it a certain amount of green stuff, and this is where a paddock of Italian or green feed oats comes in so handy, particularly in an area like Canterbury where practically no ensilage is saved. Top-dressing Grassland—Quite apart from the sowing of autumn-sown cereals or Italian ryegrass and of building up root crops with extra manuring there is a special case this year for the top-dressing of ordinary pastures with suitable fertilisers. Experiments and experience have both shown that the autumn is the most important time to assist pastures. The effect of top-dressing in the autumn is to stimulate root growth, help the pastures into the winter and give greater carrying capacity at a time of the year when feed is most likely to be short. It is always as well to top-dress the better class pastures, as these will give the greatest returns for the manure applied. For autumn manuring. Superphosphate should be the main fertiliser used, but if quick growth is required. Ammoniated Super is a fertiliser that can be strongly recommended as its nitrogen content stimulates the ryegrass, which, with suitable rains, will give good growth in the autumn. Quite a number of farmers now are using Ammoniated Super on their better pastures—those containing a good percentage of rvegrass. If farmers are likely to be short of feed in the autumn, the Ammoniated Super can be applied now. but in the case of feed being required in the early winter, the use of Ammoniated Super could be delayed until about April. In the r-nse of later applications, it is very important not to graze the pastures too bare before applying the fertiliser. A certain amount of leaf on the pasture will enable the plants to utilise the fertiliser much better than if the pastures have been closely grazed. On sheep pastures. 2cwt of Ammoniated Suner is recommended, and on dairv pastures. 3cwt Der acre. M 6930 H. MATSON and CO. FORD AND HADFIELD. LTD. MERIVALE. MERIVALE. £(£s(), MERIVALE.
