HANMER SPRINGS Advice has been received by Mr J. T. Kibblewhite, the" schoolmaster, that the Hanmer Springs school has been awarded the Education Board's first prize in the "Fruit tree, general plant propagation, and forest nursery work" competition for 1933-34. The judging was done by the board's instructor in agriculture. Mrs Acutt (London), Dominion representative of the Dr. Barnado's Homes Mission, visited Hanmer Springs on Tuesday, and gave an address in the hall in the evening, to a representative attendance, including the school children. A series of lantern slides were used to illustrate the work from its beginning to the present day, when 8000 boys and girls are housed in cottage homes in the country. Mrs Acutt paid a tribute to the work of Mrs H. J. Peek, president for 10 years of the Hanmer sub-centre of the Young Helpers' League, and to Mrs J. Glass, the secretary. Items were contributed by Mrs Glass and Mr D. Stavert. ROTHERHAM The Rotherham Presbyterian Ladies' Guild held its first anniversary on Tuesday afternoon at the residence of the president, Mrs R. W. Skinner. Songs were given by Mrs W. Cooksley and Mrs R. Skinner, and a piano solo by Miss N. Britten. The afternoon tea was supplemented by an iced birthday cake made and presented by Mrs M. Anderson. Opportunity was taken to say good-bye to Miss Mulcock, matron J of Amuri Hospital, who has been promoted to another district. Mrs Skinner, on behalf of members, asked Miss Mulcock to accept a pair of book-ends as a token of appreciation. Competitions were won by Mrs Cooksley, Misses H. Mathews and C. Boag.
