MR MACDONALD AND LADY HOUSTON

TO THE EDITOR OF THE PRESS. • Sir,—"Associates of a well-known millionaire who are prepared to spend £200,000 on forcing the resignation of Mr Ramsay Mac Donald and the withdrawal of the India Bill by running independent Conservatives at by-elec-tions," should, I think, have read Associates of a wen-known millionairess," as this savours of one of L,ady Houston's activities to oust the Prime Minister from office. „ She has repeatedly, without fear or favour, published the P olltl J? a j miJ j" deeds of Mr Mac Donald, and I recall that in April 1932, she offered this same sum of £200,000 to Mr Nov 110 Chamberlain, the Chancellor cf the Exchequer, to be allocated for the Army, Navy, and Air Force—an cfier that was refused by order of the Pi lme Minister. As I pointed out in a previous letter on this page, I was instructed to acquaint Mr Mac Donald of a further offer of £200,000 to form an air defence for London, an offer that was neither accepted, lefused, nor even acknowledged. 1 am also forcibly reminded of her magnanimous gift of £1,500,000 to Mr Winston Churchill, when Chancellor ot the Exchequer, and a further gift of £IOO,OOO to the Air Force, when she made her own precedents. Lady Houston informed nie that she has never met Mr Ramsay Mac Donald; that in fact she has never seen him; but she will continue boldly to defy the influences of political enemies, and help to make Britain, rise again to its foremost position among the rations of the world. Yours, etc., A. A. M. GRUNDY. March 6, 1935.
