A CLOTHES RACK

A useful clothes rack which will fold up into a very small space when not in use can be constructed easily from a bundle of light pieces of timber. The centre pole is 2in x 2in and sft long and is mounted upon a foundation made by scalfir.ir together two pieces of 3in x 2in, each 2ft long, as shown at A. The

end of the pole is morticed into these, using a shouldered stub tenon. Four short stays cut from some 3in x lin are firmly screwed into position between the pole and the base to give it the necessary rigidity. The rails and the uprights at the outside are lJin x Ain. They should be straight grained and well dressed and sandpapered.

The rails are 3ft long and are bolted to the pole in the manner shown in the cross section, B, with 3iin x .{in bolts. Care must be taken to see that the bolt holes do not clash. Scribe a line round the pole with the aid of a square as shown by the dotted line at C; by boring one hole above this line and one below they are made to pass in the centre.

The bottom rail is 20in from the floor to the bolt hole, and the second and top l'ails are 18in apart. The outside ends are bolted to the uprights with l£-in x 3in bolts. Washers are put under all the nuts so that the rails are firm and yet loose enough to allow them to move easily when the rack is folded into the position shown at D.
