New Bank Premises The work of erecting new premises in Market clace for the National Bank will probably be begun this week. Mr \V. J. Thompson, of Springlands, is the contractor. Fire A ilve-seater car. owned by Mr J. Wells, of Roselands, was partially dertroyed by fire yesterday afternoon. It is not known how the outbreak occurred. but when it was discovered flames had a hold beneath the front floor boards. The car was pushed out of the garage by neighbours, and the flames were soon extinguished. The damage was done mainly to the hood and upholstery. The car, which was fairly old. was not insured and no damage was done to the garage. Homestead Threatened Mrs A. E. Badman's homestead at "Waikakaho yesterday afternoon was in serious danger of total destruction by fire, when some blackberries were being burnt off. The wind carried the fire to paddocks on the opposite side fit the road. The flames spread rapjdly and a large plantation of firs close to the house was threatened. Assistance was sought by telephone and farmers from all parts of the dis- 1 trict gathered quickly and were able to control the fire before it reached the plantation. Licensing: Committee Tiie matter of the adjourned application by John O'Gradv for the license of the Tuamarina Hotel came before the quarterly meeting of the Wairau Licensing Committee to-day. It was intimated to the copnmittee by the applicant that as proposals to rebuild the hotel had fallen through, he had Kiven up trading, and abandoned the application. As a hotel at Tuamarina was considered unnecessary, the application Vas formally refused. Danger to Health From Oust At the monthly meeting of the Havelock Town Board last evening, with Mr J. R. Buncombe presiding, the Health Inspector called attention to the danger to public health Irom dust blowing in clouds into business premises, including those of food-sellers. The importance of having the main read tar-sealed at the earliest opportunity was stressed. The inconvenience caused by the closing of the Magistrate's Court in Havelock was fully discussed. It was stated that owing to the great mining activity in the district more court business had been forthcoming of late than at any time in the last 10 years. The necessity of having to go to Blenheim had been costly and inconvenient to miners. It was decided that the board should renew efforts to get the court re-estab-lished. Personal Mr T. E. Maunsell, S.M., who is visiting Blenheim for the Magistrate's Court sessions, is staying at the Criterion Hotel. Mr J. C. Fissenden, vice-president and former chairman of the London executive of the Royal Life Saving Society, accompanied by Mr Billson, will visit Blenheim on March 13. Mr and Mrs G. F. Wright, of Christchurch. are guests at Barry's Hotel. Cricket Fixtures The following are the cricket fixtures for Sturday:— Senior Grade—Kiwi B v. Tuamarina, Awatere v. Kiwi A, Marshlands v.
