Hamilton and Amos Smith. Amateur Cycling The Rangiora Amateur cycling Club held the last of a series of three track meetings on the Rangiora Domain last evening. Wyllie House points) 3, Chapman House (44 points) 4. Presbyterian Ladies' Guild The John Knox Presbyterian Ladies' Guild met yesterday afternoon, the president, Mrs T. S. Hanna, presiding. A welcome was extended to Mrs W. Gilmore. president of the Presbyterian Women's Guild at Allora, Darling Downs, Queensland, Australia, and greetings were conveyed to her from the guild to be handed on to her guild upon her return home. Stallholders were appointed for the sale of work to be held shortly. .Jhe conveners are as follows: —Work, Mrs J. Wilson; cake, Mrs T. S. Hanna; jumble, Mrs W. Anderson; produce, Mrs J. hawarden As a mark of respect to the late Mrs Spence, wife of the president of the Hawarden Tennis Club, the final match for the Mander Banner, between the Waikari and Hawarden tennis clubs, was not played yesterday. WAIKARI Rain fell on 11 days in Waikari during February, the total fell being 1.64 inches, of which 35 points fell on February 24. In February, 1934, 95 points fell on eight days. For the last two months the total fall was 2.66 inches. There was a large attendance ot members at the quarterly meeting of the Loyal Waikari Lodge, No. 6241, J.0.0.F., M.U., Ashley District. Bro. j. Carlyle, N.G., presided, and the officers of the district were present and initiated one candidate into the order. Sick pay amounting to £2O 10s and doctor's accounts amounting to £25 were passed for payment. Bros. Fred. Trounce and E. R. Anderson were elected delegates to the annual district conference. Mrs H. M. Cocks presided over the monthly meeting of the Waikari branch of the Mothers' Union. The hostesses for afternoon tea were Mrs H. M. Cocks and Mrs J. B. Page. The annual parish picnic of the Waikari parochial district was held in fine weather at the upper Waipara crossing, and proved very successful, with nearly 200 people present. MARSHLAND The monthly meeting of the Marshland Hall Committee was attended by Messrs H. Hibbard (chairman), D. Goode, F. Rogal, G. Chisnall, W. Andrews, L Wilson, C. Booker, A. Gibbs, and H. R. Marks (secretary). It was arranged to hold a further working bee on March 13. A letter was received from Mr J. Walter, secretary to the hall trustees, stating that the balance of the memorial committee funds had been handed over for maintaining the memorial gates at the hall. An application from the local Plunket committee for the use of the tables, forms, and crockery at the Marshland sports on Saturday was granted. Good entries for all classes for the Marshland sports on Saturday next have been received, and a successful meeting is anticipated. The afternoon tea stall and ice-cream stall will be managed by the local Plunket committee. HALSWELL The hall committee held its usual card party and dance on Saturday night. The winners of competitions were Mrs Wilson 1, Mrs Chapman 2. Music for the dance , was played by Mr F. Smith's orchestra. Messrs D. F. Wilhelm, and W. Collins were masters of ceremonies.
YALDHURST ! On Sunday afternoon there was a | large congregation at St. Luke's An- j glican Church, Yaldhurst. The Rev. H. T. York preached the sermon and Miss E. Blank was organist. After the service a presentation of hymn and prayer books and an inkstand from the members of St. Luke's was made to Mr James Blank and Miss Sylvia Curtis, whose marriage will take place shortly. Mr Blank has been churchwarden for many years and Miss Curtis has been a helpful member of the church. Mr Blank replied. Mrs Cook (Mount Pleasant), who has been the guest of her son, Mr Cook (Yaldhurst), has returned home. DUNSANDEL Ram fell on nine days during February, the total fall being 1.44 inches. The total for February last year was 1.74. Mr and Mrs James Walker (Southwood, Dunsandel) are visitng Hanmer on holiday. Mrs R. H. Johnston is in New Plymouth on holiday. Mrs A. J. Johnston ("The Willows") is staying with relatives in Wellington. Mrs J. J. Allan ("Gift Farm") is spending a fortnight in Sumner. Mr and Mrs W. J. Wraight ("Greensilcld") are on holiday in Dunedin. A meeting of ratepayers in the Dunsandel Hall rating area was held recently to discuss a reduced scale ot charges as submitted by the hall board. Mr W. Gilmour, chairman of the Selwyn County Council, presided, and Mr E. T. Dalmer, county clerk, was also present. The Town Hall is vested in the county council, which is responsible for maintenance should the revenue from rents be insufficient. Mr R. H. Johnston outlined the cost of the building of the hall, and stated how the amount was collected and how much was needed to carry on. He submitted a reduced scale of charges, and said that these reductions might mean that the hall would be used more frequently, and consequently more revenue would accrue. It was decided to recommend that the hall board should adopt the reduced scale of charges. ! SHEFFIELD In the absence of the president (Mr : j. J. Cogan). Mr J. S. To'lcrlon presided at a recent committee meeting of the Malvern Agricultural and Pastoral Association, which was held in the association's rooms at Sheffield; It was decided to continue with the preparations for the annual show, which will be held in the domain 011 April 18. The bi-monthly meeting of the Loyal Malvern Lodge, No. 6247, 1.0.0. F., M.U., was held in the Oddfellows' chambers on Monday evening, when N.G. Bro. Leonard Jones presided over a large attendance of officers and members. Bros. W. E. Rodgers, P.G., and C. J. H. Henderson, P.G., were chosen to represent the lodge at 11re annual district conference. The agenda paper was discussed and the delegates were instructed to adhere to the resolutions of the meeting. Sick pay of £7 and other accounts amounting to £l2 10s 3d were passed for payment. Mr Frank Jones, of Waddington. is at present visiting his parents. Mr and Mrs F. T. Jones (Styx). LEESTON The first annual meeting o! the Ellcsmere Choral Society was presided over by the Rev. F. B. La\vrencc, and there was a good attendance. The report stated that 2D practices had been held with an average attendance of 34. Six concerts had been given and the year had ended with a credit balance of £7 8s sd. Officers elected were:—Patron. 'Miss M. Nixon; president. Mr A. J. Henderson; vice-presi-dents, Messrs F. B. Woodard, L. G. Bade. F. Rowell. J. H. McMillan, and Dr. W. A. Johnston: hon. secretary, Mr F. W. Jarman: librarian. Miss C. O'Gorman; committee. Mesdames F. B. Woodard and W. C. Eggleton, Misses M. Nixon and M. Eade, and Messrs H. Wright, Johnson, and L. G. Eade; conductor, Mr G. B. Couch; pianist, Miss Betty Eggleton.
It was decided that practices should be held on Monday evenings, beginning on March 18. Mr R. Grant presided over the monthly meeting of the Leeston School Committee, at which a letter was received, from the Canterbury School Committees' Association suggesting that a meeting of school committee members in the Ellesmere district should be held at Leeston, to be attended by executive officers of the association. It was mentioned that arrangements for the meeting were in the hands of Mr A. McPherson. chairman of the Southbridge committee. The headmaster reported that the roll was 116, and the average attendance 112. The regular refilling of the bath and the unusually warm summer had given a marked impetus to swimming this season.
Following the school committee meeting the general committee controlling the queen carnival to be held this month in aid of the school funds met, Mr Grant presiding. An offer from Mr T. J. Ramsay to erect and dismantle stalls was accepted. A successful social was hem at the Town Hall in aid of the east ward queen. At cards the most successful players were Mesdames Mercer and Gwatkin and Messrs G. Rookes and D. H. Reid. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss Henebery and Mr H. Batt. Mrs Lambie and Mr R. Lambie played the dance music, and Mr R. H. Ford was master of ceremonies. AKAROA A meeting of the Akaroa District High School Committee was held on Monday, with the Rev. H. N. Wright presiding. It was decided to hold the annual picnic at the Wainui Domain on Tuesday. In view of the school sports to be held at Akaroa at the end of the month, it was decided not to hold any athletic events at the picnic. The headmaster, Mr C. A. Young, reported that the roll numbers were: Primary 64, secondary 46, with average attendances for the month of 60 and 44 respectively. The secretary was instructed to ask the Education Board to supply more sewing machines for the secondary department, as at present there were only two machines for 23' pupils. Accounts amounting to £4 16s 4d were passed for payment. LINCOLN Harvest thanksgiving services were held in St. Stephen's Church last Sunday, and were well attended. Holy Communion was celebrated at 11 a.m., and evensong at 7 o'clock, the preacher on both occasions being the vicar (the Rev. T. M. Curnow). A Shrove Tuesday social was held in the Public Hall under the auspices of St. Stephen's Church, when there was a good attendance. Musical items were given by Mesdames Curnow and H. Golding, and Miss Henry, Messrs C. Mills, H. Mills, J. Curnow, and the Rev. T. M. Curnow. Competitions were won by Messrs W. Langdon and C. Mills, Misses G. Deans and E. Ford. A short dance finished the evening, the music being played by Mesdames Curnow and H. Golding and Miss M. Dean. Supper was provided by the ladies.
