LAWN TENNIS

* UNITED CLUB EVENTS CHAMPIONSHIPS NEAUING FINALS With the grass court season rapidly drawing to a close, the United Club's championships and handicap events are now being hurried on. Several of the former events have reached the semi-final stages, but in others no more limn the first round games have been played in certain sections of the draw. The withdrawal of two seeded player, from the men's singles has left this event ill-balanced, lor the first three ranking players in Canterbury, Angas, Dymond, and Cant, are all in the one half, while the fourth man, Barrel*, should have an easy run to the /inn] in the other. The younger players have all been doing very well. Co rich defeated Young, who is above him on the ranking list, in four sets and now meets Cant. The winner will probably meet Dymond for the right tc> contest the semi-final with Angas, who wa£ fully extended in the Hrst set by I'attinson, the New Zealand junior champion. In the other half Barrel' will now meet another promising youngster, Penfold, the winner playing either W. S. Somerville or Jlobinson in the semi-final.

The women's singles lies virtually between Miss Rudkin and Miss I. Poole in the top half and Miss T. Poole and Miss Gould in the bottom. Semi-final-ists in the men's doubles will probably be Angas and Dymond, Sheppard and Cant, Somerville and Tait, and the winenrs of the match between A'Court and Robinson and Corich and Pen fold. The last-mentioned pair had a meritorious win in a belated flrstround match over Glanville and Browning. The youngsters lost the lirt-L and second sets and won the third when the match had to bo adjourned owing to failing light. When ir was resumed they hit much moro uceiMvely, and defending well against the veterans' net attacK, won the nrrvssary two sets. The women's doubles semi-finals are likely to lie between Misses 1. and T. Poole and Misses Bishop and Fleetwood, ;nid Misses Wake and Sherris, and Mrs Maedonald and Miss Rudkin. Only two pairs have reached the semifinals of the mixed event. Miss Fleetwood and W. S. Somerville and Mrs Peppier and Cant. The former pair will probably play Miss Sherris and Sheppard and the latter the winner of the match between Miss Wake and Glanville and Miss Gould and Brownin::.
