GROUP GARDEN PARTY

WOMEN'S DIVISION OF FARMERS' UNION Group garden parties arranged by the various branches of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union have become very popular with division members, for not only do they provide a pleasant outing for many country women, but they also enable members of neighbouring branches to become acquainted with each other, discuss their difficulties and find a common avenue of help for all. The garden party held by the Oxford branch at the home of Mrs H. F. Luers, yesterday afternoon, proved particularly enjoyable, the well-kept gardens and shady trees showing their first autumn tints, making a very effective setting for the function. Members from the Cust-West Eyreton, Darfield, Swannanoa, Woodend, and Fernside branches were amongst the guests. Mrs Colin Mcintosh (Dominion vicepresident), and Mrs H. A. Nutt (provincial president), were also present, and made many helpful .suggestions concerning the activities of the branches. Talks were also given by the following branch presidents:— Mrs G. Cowens (Cust-West Eyreton), Mrs A. M. Carpenter (Fernside), Mrs Paget (Swannanoa). Mrs H. Ellen (Woodend), and Mrs D. McMillan (Darfield). Much regret was expressed that the Dominion president (Mrs Ward) had been prevented, owing to lack of time, from calling in at Oxford on her way to Wellington. A dainty afternoon tea was served by the hostesses and the guests found inueh pleasure in strolling round the gardens or chatting beneath the trees. A baby show added interest to the afternoon's programme, and the judges. Dr. Burnett and Dr. Minty, awarded prizes as follows:—Under six months, Collin Allen; under 12 months, Anthony Ellen; under 18 months, James Walsh. A visitor from Australia, who was one of the guests, was greatly impressed with the beautiful surroundings, and the interest taken by members in the work of the division.
