UPPER RICCARTON AFFAIRS
- DUMPING OF RUBBISH IN MIDDLETON PIT A suggestion that the public should be allowed to dump rubbish in the pit at Middleton as a means of filling it more rapidly was made at the meeting last night of the Upper Riccarton and Sockburn Burgesses' Association. Mr F. T. Witty was in the chair. It was stated that loads of rubbish were carted daily from city factories to Hornby. After some discussion it was decided to bring the suggestion before the notice of the Waimairi County Council. The danger of tram passengers being discharged from the one-man trams on the wrong side of the road, was discuFsed and it was decided to ask the Tramway Board to investigate the possibility of fitting the trams so that the door on either side could be opened. This, it was pointed out, would mean that passengers could be riitcharged on the side nearer the footpath. It was agreed to ask the Waimairi County Council to tar-seal Waimairi road from Riccarton road to the first bridge across the Avon. Fire Board Meeting A meeting of the Fire Board was held later in the evening, Mr W. Cole presiding. Mr F. J. Alley reported that £2B 12s was now deposited in the bank and that donations which would bring this amount up to approximately £45 had been promised.
