NEW CHURCH FOR HAREWOOD
PLANS APPROVED The plans and specifications of the new Church of St. James, which is to be built on Harewood road, Papanui parish, have been approved by the Diocesan authorities, and the building will shortly tie put in hand, states the "Church News." It is to be constructed of concrete, to accommodate about 50 people. As the church is so small, it was suggested that it would be wise to make provision for a possible extension eastward in the future, but in view of the unanimous opinion of the parishioners that no great increase in the congregation was likely within the next 100 years, the suggestion was not pressed. The church stands at the junction of several roads, but the district is not at present very suitable for closer settlement. One of the reasons for erecting the new church on the present situation is that so many of the pioneer settlers of the district are buried in the churchyard. The brief history of Papanui parish issued at the seventyfifth anniversary states that the present church was built in 1862 through the efforts of the brothers Foulger (one of whom was ordained later), who are understood to have been the first schoolmasters in the small school held in the cottage on the church section. The east window was ordered from England and canvas covered the space until it arrived. The bell was that which was first used in St. Paul's. The architect for the new church is Mr R. S. D. Karman.
