NEW ZEALAND TARIFF CRITICISED
LOUD NUFFIELD DISCUSSES DUTIES ON CARS ( I'll KSS ASSOCIATION '1 JiMiUIIAM .) WELLINGTON, March 4. Criticism of the New Zealand tariff duties on motor-vehicles was offered to-day by Lord Nuffield on his arrival by the Monowai. "These duties," he said, "have made it compulsory for bodies and chassis to be exported to New Zealand in completely unassembled condition." This was the only country in the world to require this, and he considered it quite uneconomical. From general observations, it seemed that these new tariffs would ultimately result in an increase in the cost of motor-vehicles, and he suggested that while their aim in imposing them had been to facilitate importations from England, there was a danger that their action might result in advantage accruing to foreign importers.
