On the eve u( a grand jury investigation into vice, gambling and racketeering in New York city, gangsters murdered three men today and each ea.se, the police believe, was an efl'ort by underworld leaders to suppress evidence regardin.':' their activities. Two of the men were shot down in the streets from passing motorears, and were identified as "salesmen" for a "policy racket," an illegal lottery which is said to enjoy an income of approximately 500.000.000 dollars a year. The third victim was a taxi driver. Me had no criminal record, and the oolice believe that th" intended victim was a woman passenger connected with wbite slave ope ra 1 ions. The present anti-crime drive started with charges bv clergymen and others interested in the suppression of vice and gambling that the police were protecting racketeers and. with political loaders, were receiving huge graft from these sources. The police claim that they have made more than 300 arrests for "policy" operations in the last two months, but admit that this type ")f gambling is still flourishing.
TRANSPORT STRIKE IN DUBLIN —. —,» SUSPENSION OF ENGINEDRIVER DUBLIN, March 3. Dublin is in the throes of transport trouble due to a lightning strike at the Great Western terminus, Kingsbridge, and the Inchicore Works, due to the suspension of an engine-driver. The strike began with a goods train last night. This morning's newspaper trains did not run, after which the workmen resumed, but came out again in the evening, bringing to a standstill all trains. Meanwhile, a stoppage of buses and trams is expected to-morrow, due to a strike over the dismissal of a bus-driver.
