WEIR IN THE AVON
RETENTION FAVOURED The provision of weirs in the Avon river was favoured by members of the Christchurch Beautifying Association at a meeting last night. Appreciative comment was made on the improved appearance of the river between the Armagh street and the Carlton Mill bridges which resulted from the building" of a temporary weir at the Armagh street bridge shortly before the visit of the Duke of Gloucester; and it was considered tliLt if the higher level was maintained it would make the river much more attractive. The chairman, Mr R. B. Owen, said it was a good time to press the matter, while the great improvement m;.de by the raising of the river was still fresh in the minds of members of the Drainage Board. Mr Irving Sladen remarked that moot of the members of the board seemed to be favourably inclined to the retention of the weir. After a discussion on the advantages to be gained from the raising o f the levels of the Avon and Heathcote rivers, it was agreed to ask the Drainage Board to try to obtain legislative power to increase the level of the Avon, and also to obtain the right to provide for the maintenance of weirs out of its funds. Messrs Owen, Sladen, and A. Peverill were appointed a deputation to wait on the board. ,
