LAWN TENNIS

—.« CANTERBURY TEAMS SELECTED NEW PLAYERS FOR CONTESTS AGAINST AUCKLAND The selectors to the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association (Messrs J. Mercer, T. W. Patterson, and J. H. W. Sheppard) named the following players last evening to defend the Anthony Wilding Memorial Shield and the Kathleen Nunneley Casket against the Auckland teams at Wilding Park on March 15 and 16:— Wilding Shield C. Angas. H. A. Barnett. H. Dymond A. R. Cant. Emergency: B. A. Barren Nunneley Casket Miss E. Rudkin. Miss T. Poole. Miss I. Pooie Mrs D. Macdonald. Emergency: Miss M. Wake. The teams will practise at Wilding Park on Thursday evening. Miss Wake's Form Only one criticism will be levelled at the selectors in their choice of teams to defend the trophies which were won from Wellington in January. That is the selection of Mrs Macdonald without first matching her against Miss Wake. The latter was unable to play in competitive tennis tor the first half of the season owing Lo an injured hand, and she was forced to withdraw from the Canterbury ranking list. Since Christmas, however, Miss Wake has played regularly, and she has been regaining something of the form that kept her at the head of Canterbury tennis for

a number of years. Her experience and match temperament would undoubtedly have been of value in a close contest, as the challenge match promises to be. However, Mrs Macdonald has shown greatly improved form this seasons and recently has fully extended both the Misses Poole. She will be playing in representative tennis for the first time, but she has had plenty of experience in championship matches. She has a very good stroke equipment with a fast, sliced backhand that most opponents find disconcerting. Her service and volleying have improved greatly this season. Champion Not Available The Canterbury team will undoubtedly be weakened by the absence of Miss M. Sherris, the provincial champion, who has had lo withdraw from competitive tennis on account of illneuuh. Miss B. Gould, who also might nave been considered by the selectors Tn choosing a player to fill Miss Sherris's place, will be absent from New Zealand when the Nunneley Casket match is being played. The team to defend the Wilding Shield is the best now available. Cant, who, like Mrs Macdonald, will be, playing in the province's four for the lirst time, also has been showing good form lately. The Auckland teams, which have been reviewed in the tennis notes, are as follows: Wilding Shield—N. G. Sturt, M. T. Wilson, A. D. Brown, and J: W. Gunn. Nunneley Casket —Miss Marjorie Alactarlane, Miss R. Taylor, Miss B. Knight, and Miss V. Eccles.

INCREASE IN VOTING POWER PLANS OF INTERNATIONAL FEDERATION (UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION—r.Y ELBCTJUO 'IF.LEGIUPH—LOrvaiGUT.) LONDON, March 3. The "Observer" says the International Tennis Federation on March 15 will consider ;i of votes with a view to granting greater recognition to countries which have become more important since the votes were originally allotted. Although France. Great Britain, Australia, Germany, and America will have their votes increased from six to 12, Canada, Italy, New Zealand and South Africa will have their votes increased from four to nine. Japan and Czechoslovakia, which formerly had two votes, will be given nine, and other countries with three will be given seven, with proportionate increases among the lower representations.

Thus the voting power will be increased from 99 to 259.
