SUBURBAN LIBRARIES
_♦_ MANY REQUESTS TO COUNCIL FOR ASSISTANCE Each year there is some competition among the various committees for a share in the grant that the City Council usually provides in the estimates for the construction or repairing of suburban library buildings. Rarely, however, does the council provide for two major projects in the same year and because of the number of requests this year the competition is keener than usual. At the annual meeting of the Waltham Public Library last night, when the question of repairs was being discussed, Cr. T. H. said that four or live applications for financial assistance would have to be considered this year. The Linwood library was in a bad statu of repair, and needed attention. Alterations were proposed for the Papanui library, whicjji would cost about £900; and the residents of Opawa wanted a library built there. "They should get it, too," he said, "if they have enough interest in the district. If not, they would be better without it." Cr. G. T. Thurston, who was also present at the meeting, mentioned that the St. Martins library committee was asking for improved lighting. He suggested that the Municipal Electricity Department should make no charge , for the lighting of the suburban! libraries,
