The mulches were played on the Rangiora Club's courts, there being a good attendance of spectators. The men's singles title u-as successfully defended by J. A. F. Watson, who had n hard match with <;. Carpenter. f!. 1.. Watkins and n. Morris beat the litle-liolders, .T. A. F. Watson and L. Taylor, in the men's doubles, and J. A. P. Watson and Miss K. Edlin (last year's winners) again won Ihe combined doubles. The lennis on Ihe whole was of a high standard, especially in the singles and doubles events.
MEN'S SINGLES ■T. A. V. Watson heat G-. Carpenter, 5-G. 6-4. 64. Carpenter gave Watson the hardest match ho has had during the tournament, and had he been able to hold the crucial games in the second and third sets lie may have reversed the ultimate result. Watson was forced to play more from the baseline than usual, as Carpenter was mixing accurate lobs with deep forehand drives to the backhand corner, and was not afraid to attack from the net position. Watson, however, sleadied his game in the latter part of the lliird set. when the score was 4-3 against him. and. »ided by Carpenter's mistakes, ran out the winner after a good match. JIKN'S DOURT.KS 1 C. Watkins and X,. Morris beat J. A. K. Watson and h. Taylor. G-2, ."■(;. G-4. Had positional play and good driving and overhead work tiy their opponents cost Watson and Taylor the men's doubles title. Accurate smashing was responsible for Watkins and Morris taking the first set comfortably, but in the second set, Wafson and Taylor forced their opponents into error with lobs and good ground strokes. Several brilliant volleying exchanges from (lie centre court position were seen in the middle of the third set, but Walkins and Morris, playing more, aagressive tennis, gained a welldeserved win. COM rUNEI) UOUUI.KS .7. A. F. Watson and Miss T. F.dlin beat \j. fi. Watkins and Mrs G. Mori land, 6-5, fi-". Miss Kdlin's steadiness and her ability tn retrieve the hard-driven balls from both Hie opposition players, combined with Watsou's superior courteraft, were the main factors in the defeat of Watkins and Mrs Mortland in two straight sets. Although the losers drove well they played as individuals, and it was seldom that the combination essential in doubles play was shown by them. Watson and Miss Kdlin. on the other band, worked in unison, and at no singe of the match looked like losing. >
