OBITUARY
MRS ELIZABETH HOBBS The death occurred at her residence 4 Mansfield avenue, on Saturday of Mrs Elizabeth Hobbs, one of the pioneer settlers of Canterbury, in her eighty-ninth year. Mrs Hobbs arrived at Lyttelton with her parents and their family in the ship Clontalf in January, 1869. Her father settled on a small farm at Sumner near the foo.t of the Lyttelton road, and she lived there for a number of years She was married at the Woolston Church. to Mr Frederick Hobbs, who was Mayor of Christchurch in 1875 and 1876, and also chairman of the Drainage Board when the system was introduced in the city. Mrs Hobbs was a popular and in many ways a remarkable woi.,.n, retaining her faculties and her apprecia tion of life until the short illness which culminated in her death withm a few days of her eighty-ninth birthday. Like many of the old pioneers, she had a large family, and nine children survive her. Her husband died in iS 2O " T. TT TT 1 U The sons are Messrs F. H. Hobbs (London), L. J. Hobbs (Dunedin), and V W., C. H., R. J., H. S., and A. E. Hobbs (Christchurch). There are two unmarried daughters, Misses Nellie and Bessie Hobbs, both of Christchurch.
