NORTH QUEENSLAND DELUGE
♦ NINETY-SIX HOURS' RAIN MUCH DAMAGE DONE (Received March 3, 6.30 p.m.) BRISBANE, March 3. For 96 hours without ceasing a tropical deluge has caused phenomenal floods on the North Queensland coast, from Mossman to Ingham, a distance of 200 miles. The whole countryside, including the town of Cairns, is flooded. Hundreds of head of stock have been drowned. Many people were forced to leave their homes, some being rescued by the police. Cairns had 44 inches of rain this week. Innisfail is isolated, with the Johnstone river in high flood. Tully recorded 37 inches of rain in three days. Much damage has been done to the sugar-cane crops.
TRAFFIC AT STANDSTILL BRISBANE, March 2. North Queensland is still being deluged by rain. A further 10 inches fell at Tully yesterday. Railway, mail, and road traffic is at a standstill. Innisfail and other centres are isolated by floods."
