BANKS PENINSULA R.C.
CUP WON BY FRACAS IMPERIAL SPEAR AND KNOCK OUT SUCCEED The summer meeting of the Banks Peninsula Racing Club, held at Motukarara on Saturday, was one of the most enjoyable and successful country meetings in the Canterbury district for many years, while its financial outcome should place the progressive club on a sound footing. There was an exceptionally large gathering of racegoers, no doubt encouraged to make the outing by the pleasant weather, and by the promise of some interesting contests. The track was in splendid order, its surface providing a welcome contrast to the hard going on most courses in the South Island during the last few months. The racing was full of interest, and it kept patrons up to a high pitch of enthusiasm throughout the programme. Investors fared reasonably well, and this helped to maintain speculation, which was much brisker than had been anticipated. The sum of £12,184 was handled as against £B6IO at the corresponding meeting last year, representing an increase of £3574. The gate receipts showed an advance of more than £SO, and other sources of revenue were also higher. The programme was well conducted under the organisation of the president, Mr W. F. Parkinson, and secretary, Mr i<\ T. H. Bell, and the remaining officials all worked assiduously towards the smooth running of the fixture. The contest for the Peninsula Cup created keen interest, and the success of the Chokebore filly Fracas, who was a staunch favourite with the public, was popularly received. At the conclusion of the race, Mr Parkinson called on Sir R. Heaton Rhodes, M.L.C., to make the presentation of the silver cup attached to the stake, and given by Mr J. D Bundy. Sir 'Heaton Rhodes expressed the pleasure all had derived by the trophy being won by a son of Canterbury's former leading owner and supporter of racing, Sir George Clifford, whose victories on the turf were always popular with the racing public. Sir Charles Clifford had followed in his father's footsteps in maintaining a large team, and it would be pleasing to everyone to find him going on winning plenty of more races and trophies. Sir Heaton then handed the cup to Sir Charles, who briefly replied, and Mrs Bundy decorated the winner, Fracas, with a blue ribbon, the usual rounds of cheers being given by a large gathering which surrounded the enclosure.
The Kinloch Handicap was won in a clever manner by Imperial Spear, who successfully staved off a strong challenge by Manetho, who did not appear on the scene until the closing stages. NOTES ON THE RACING An Easy Win The Chokebore filly, Owlsgleam, justified her favouritism by scoring a decisive win in the Motukarara Juvenile Stakes. She followed Gas Mask, Convivial, and Gold Label out of the dispatch, and was in close attendance on Gas Mask, Convivial, and Gold Label entering upon the home run, with Malvasia at the head of the remainder. The favourite forged ahead a furlong from the post, and was not troubled to win by two lengths. In a close tusslo for second money, Convivial hung on to beat Gold Label by a neck, with a head margin to Malvasia. Gas Mask, Land Raid, Rotokino, and Toolcy Street were next. The winner had the advantage of having had more previous experience than the majority, and she actually outclassed them over the final stage. Convivial showed promising form, and if she can be kepi sound, she should win races. Gold Label, by Robespierre, ran up to her recent good track work, while Malvasia finished well after giving the leaders an appreciable break into the straight.
Chiddcn's First Win A close finish was seen in Die Tcrawera High-weight Hack Handicap. The favourite, Moonbeam, was first to show out and Jed through the back stretch from Quebec, Bettwyscoed, Jer/y Boy, and Top Rank. There was not much change rounding the far turn, except that Jolly Beggar joined the leading division. Moonbeam was still in charge entering the straight from Bettwyscoed, Jolly Beggar, Quebec, and Chidden, and seemed to be a winner until Jolly Beggar and Chidden tackled her. In a punishing finish, Chidden got her head in front a chain from the post, and just got home from Jolly Beggar, who squeezed up between the winner and Moonbeam in the last stride, and beat the favourite by a head. Jerry Boy, who was sent back half-way through the race, finished well to get into fourth place two lengths away in front of Lowatcr, Quebec, and Hot Stuff. This was Chiddcn's first success. She was inclined to run in under pressure, and O'Connor had to stop riding her nearing the post to straighten her up. Jolly Beggar put up a stern struggle, but Moonbeam, after being made a lot of use of, for a non-stayer, was badly cramped for room over the last few strides. Jerry Boy was somewhat unlucky as he lost a good position half a mile from home. Bettwyscoed showed prominence by running up to the lead with Moonbeam after two furlongs had been covered, but she lasted to the straight entrance only. Top Rank had every chance, but was beaten a good way from home. Silly Owl was last away after giving trouble at the barrier, and tailed the field throughout. Rockella Wins First Trot General Sarsfield was best supported in the Wairewa Handicap Trot, but after being in a promising position turning into the straight, he was unable to do better than secure a modcrate third placing. Prince Roydon was the early pacemaker, and led the field until well into the straight, his nearest attendants at this stage being Rockella, General Sarsfield, Wee Wrack
and Colonel Bogey. The leader submitted to Rockella's challenge inside the distance, and the latter went on to record a comfortable win, from Prince Roydon, who as easily beat General Sarslield. Wheat Pool, Handicapper, and Colonel Bogey were next. Mystery Yet broke badly when making a forward move at the end of three furlongs. Favourite Wins Cup Fracas was supported down to a short price in the Peninsula Cup, tarrying a third of the win machine total. When the field settled down at the end of a furlong, Fair Weather was taken to Ihc front, and was joined by Courtyard going into the back stretch. Fair Weather went away again at the seven-furlong post, and was soon well clear of Courtyard, with a gap to a bunch headed by Tout le Monde, Minerval, and Sam Smith, and Polydora well in the rear. Fair Weather was still in charge rounding the far turn from Cleaner, Courtyard, Sam Smith, Tout le Monde, Minerval, and Silver Sight, with Polydora still bringing up the rear. Fair Weather held his advantage entering the straight from Courtyard, Sam Smith, and Cleaner in a line, with Fracas, Tout le Monde, Minerval, and Silver Sight next, all in close attendance. Fracas drew up to Fair Weather when heads were turned for home, and Silver Sight moved up on the rails. Fracas soon had the race in her keeping, and drew right away over the last furlong, to win easily by a length. In another close tussle for second money, Silver Sight just got up to gain the verdict, while Polydora, with a great run from the top of the straight, where she was still in last place, snatched third money on the post from Fair Weather. Courtyard, Tout le Monde, Minerval, and Sam Smith followed in that order.
Fracas was a winner over a furlong from home, and she finished full of running. She will now be a favoured candidate for the Thompson Handicap. Silver Sight drifted during the middle stages, and was a good way from the leaders at the home turn. He once again finished stubbornly, but had little chance with the winner. Polydora's effort was outstanding, and racegoers had the pleasure of once again seeing her in her real form. Fair Weather put up a creditable performance. He covered extra ground around the first turn to get to the front, and he carried ihe field along at a merry pace. He did not submit to defeat until the last few strides, and would probably have secured second place but for his young rider feeling the strain of his second ride in a race. Minerval did not complete his task as solidly as had been expected, and the same applied to Sam Smith and Tout le Monde. First Choice Beaten Emissary drew No. 1 in the Ahuriri Hack Handicap, and was sent out a staunch favourite, but after he had been in the van almost throughout, weight told on him over the last furlong, and he was decisively beaten by Tuirau, who was making a reappearance after a few months' absence. Colombo, Tuirau, and Emissary were the first noticed from barrier rise, Rose of Tralee being hopelessly left. To
hold his place, Emissary was forced to the front alongside Colombo, and the pair rounded the home turn and entered the straight in front of Tuirau, Bella Rosa, Wino, and Back Thrust. Colombo did not last long, and Tuirau emerged to tackle Emissary, with Capital putting in an appearance on the outside. Tuirau had the favourite in trouble a hundred yards from the post, and beat him handily by a length, while Capital got up to beat Bella Rosa for third money. Wino. Dover Patrol, and Back Thrust followed. Tuirau won well, and in her present form will have further successes. Emissary was backing slightly when the barrier lifted, and no doubt the forc-
ing tactics necessarily pursued with him to avoid being squeezed out contributed towards his defeat. Capital looked likely when he loomed up turning for home, but did not finish on as well as usual. Bella Rosa ran a creditable race, but Wino disappointed. Colombo showed a turn of speed while his condition lasted. Imperial Spear Impresses In spite of two bad horses in the field for the Kinloch Handicap, an excellent dispatch was effected, the early leaders being Lady Nan, Imperial Spear, and Grecian Prince. Royal Sceptre joined Lady Nan in front at the end of two furlongs, and the pair piloted Grecian Prince and Imperial Spear, racing abreast, to the home turn. The leaders went out wide turning for home, and Imperial Spear shot up on the rails. Grecian Prince looked likely to head him inside the distance, but Imperial Spear always had the race in hand, and won decisively. Manetho put in a remarkable run from the distance, to get up into second place. There was another exciting tussle for third honours, Quietly beating Colossian by a head, with a similar margin to Grecian Prince. Heather Glow and Royal Sceptre were next, with Gay Crest always in last place. Imperial Spear had a clear-out victory, helped to a certain extent by his smart run on the rails turning for home. He has been very consistent since joining the stable of D. Hastings, and now that he has become solid, he will carry on. Manetho's effort had to be seen to be appreciated, as he seemed to be in an impossible position entering the straight, and but for running about when under final pressure, he would have caused more trouble. The stable-mates Quietly and Colossian ran creditable races. The former was bracketed with Royal Sceptre, who failed badly once the straight was reached. Grecian Prince had special attention paid to him at the barrier, and he was one of the first to break the line. His behaviour was certainly a big improvement on his recent displays. Heather Glow did not race up to his recent track form Gay Crest failed to go away with the others, and was given an easy race in the rear. Improved Display Mystery Yet, favourite for the Waihora Park Handicap Trot, was responsible for an impressive performance. He was slow to find his feet, and was well behind the leaders with the journey half covered. He made a
forward move rounding the far turn, and was close up to Rollicking Wave and Dandy Locanda at the home turn. He had taken charge before the straight was reached, and led into the home run well clear of Betty Jinks, Rollicking Wave and Royal Travis. That was the end of the contest, as Mystery Yet ran home an easy winner from Betty Jinks, with a big gap to the third horse, Rollicking Wave. Royal Travis, Dandy Locanda and Cam Dillon were the next to finish. Chokebore's Third Victory The West Coaster Monipere was a surprisingly better favourite than Knock Out for the Forsyth Hack Handicap, but investors were well astray, as Monipere lost his chance by being badly away and meeting with trouble on two occasions when trying to make a forward move. Knock Out kept out of bother throughout, and followed Red Dance and Grand Review into the straight, with Bettwyscoed and Knowledge next. Knock Out had Grand Review, beaten inside the distance, and went on to record a comfortable win from Grand Review, with Final Shot a good third. Bettwyscoed was a moderate fourth in front of Monipere and Quebec. Knock Out was a winner a good way from the post, and her price was much better than expected following her good form at Trentham. This was due to the heavy support "accorded Monipere, who in addition to his West Coast performances had the services of L. J. Ellis. It was unfortunate for all concerned that Monipere suffered by the start, and also by the set-backs he received during the race. He made a promising move rounding the home turn. Grand Review ran one of her usual solid races, but seems always to encounter a good one on the day. Final Shot was the first to strike interference, and she narrowly missed falling after two furlongs had been covered, and it was through her being sent back that others met trouble. She was lame on going out. and was very sore on returning, an effect of stx-iking herself in a gallop last week. Bettwyscoed showed improvement by always being in the picture, but Quebec did not do any better than in his previous race. Knowledge showed up turning for home, only to fade out early in the straight.
