When an application from the Plunket Society seeking permission to hold a street collection in the borough came before the Mount Eden Borough Council at its last meeting it was 0 decided, on the recommendation of the finance committee, to refuse permission, but to make a donation of £25 instead. Several members expressed the opinion that the holding of street collections almost invariably had a detrimental effect on the business done by local shopkeepers. It was decided to point out that the granting of the money was on no account to be regarded as establishing a precedent.
