CLARENDON HOTEL

CHANGE OF OWNERSHIP LICENSEE EXERCISES OPTION Mr Arthur Harvey, licensee of the Clarendon Hotel, has within the last few days exercised the option over the freehold which was given him by the owner. Mr Claude H. Pip er _ when he took over the control of the hotel two and a half years ago The purchase price is stated to be nearly £25,000. Since Mr Harvey took over the license he has spent some thousands of pounds in modernising the hotel. Extensive structural alterations have been carried out, and the interior renovated and redecorated. The scheme of improvements which Mr Harvey adopted when taking over the hotel has not yet been completed, but now that he has bought the freehold it is his intention to have the remaining work done as soon as possible. The vendor, Mr Piper, was the licensee of the hotel for 12 years previous to Mr Harvey taking'over the license. The Clarendon has fur many years been recognised as one of the principal hotels of Chrisichurch. Mr Harvey, the licensee and new owner, came to Christchurch from England 49 years ago but has spent the greater part of his life since then in Dunedin.
