SHOPLIFTING CHARGE
♦ ELDERLY WOMAN ADMITTED TO PROBATION (PR£SS ASSOCIATION J 2LE'ii»AM ! DUNEDIN, March 1. Giving reserved judgment on charges of shoplifting against Mary Hunter, 64 years of age, the magistrate (Mr J. R. Bartholomew) said that one charge was clearly proved. He also convicted the accused on all other charges except two, stating that the heterogeneous assortment of articles found in her wardrobe was typical of a shoplifter's collection. The magistrate said that he found difficulty in dealing with a case of this sort. Evidence had been given by reputable citizens of her previous good character. Such an offence really merited a term of imprisonment, but he would be "justified in admitting her to probation for one year. The accused's defence was that the articles were bought or given to her over a long period, as she intended opening a shop.
