WOOL SALE

ffHfRD CHRISTCHURCH AUCTION EASING IN VALUES TOP PRICE, md FOR MERINO Values were weaker yesterday at the third Christchurch sale of the season. The demand was erratic and passings heavy, approximating about 16 per cent, of the catalogue. The wool was heavier in condition than at the preceding sale, but making allowance for this the market was easier on an average from a half-penny to three farthings per lb. Singularly, it was the di? proportion of average halfbred wool that was mostf affedted. Though crossbred was weaker it was not in the same proportion as halfbred, whilst on the, other hand merino of quality sold freely at little change in value. Top price of the sale was secured for merino at 14id. the best Corriedale figure beings 13Vd.

The attendance of growers at the gale was much smaller than usual. The fact that most of the offering comprised the province's larger back country clips, with fewer owners being directly interested and that most of the small flock owners have already disposed of their clips accounted for the smaller amount of interest. The season has caused a good deal of dry yolk in the wool and also more dust. In this respect the quality was not up to the average of the catalogue. There was a full bench of buyers, but a number of them restricted their purchases compared with the last sale. The order of sale and the individual catalogues were as follows: — Bales N.Z. Farmers' Co-op. Assn., Ltd. 5,112 National Mortgage and Agency Company. Ltd. .. 2,789 H. Matson and Company .. 2,025 Pyne, Gould, Guinness, Ltd. .. 6,881 Dalgety and Company. Ltd. .. 6,504 N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd. .. 1,689 25,000 Irregular Demand The demand was irregular from the outset, and was noticeably on a lower standard of values. This irregularity continued on well through the sale. The market lacked the fillip given to ihe previous auctions this season by ihe local mills. One North Island company operated to a fair extent, but little more than the few super lots and best pieces fell to the local buyers.

Buying: Points Tlie strongest Continental buying element was France, whose representatives secured a substantial proportion of the average halfbred fleece and pieces. Germany bought very little, and Japan was practically out of the market. Bradford and France wer«> the mainstay of the sale, the former taking a good proportion of the coarser wools. Local fellmongers found pieces and crutchings were more within their price limits than at the preceding sales. The bulk of the average quality halfbred, which sold at the January pale at from 9od to lid, realised yesterday from 9d to lOd. The proportion of double-figure prices was much fewer, and of the shilling standard noticeably so. The stronger wools appeared to hold their values better than the qualities which have dominated the market for the last few seasons. A few super merino clips came forward, and the unusual ''xperience was recorded of this class topping the market. Crossbred sold very little lower than at the preceding sale, values ranging from 43d to 5Jd, with very few lots exceeding 6d. In the afternoon there was a more spirited sale, valuations being slightly reduced to meet the market, and there was a freer disposal. Top Prices Top price of the market was 14Jd for 10 bales of Hawkesbury super merino, the second classing of nine bales mak- . 13Jd. There was one other sale

; Hid of merino—l2 bales from Fin fcq :_.e brand. The good figure of 13.1 d vas secured in the second catalogue for 22 bales of Ruapuna (J. Moore) Corriedale, the buyer being a New Zealand mill. Later in the day 13d was obtained for 13 bales of Corriedale ewe. Stonylea brand, these figures "being exceeded towards the end of the sale with 13Jd for four bales of Corrjedale Lammermoor. Best halfbred figure was 12Jd for three bales of J.L brand. A farthing less was secured for 11 bales JX over Lees Valley brand. Top price was 15£ dat the second sale in January. However, as stated, the wool was nor so good as on that occasion.

The passings approximated about 16 per cent, of the catalogue. RANGE OF VALUES The following is a range of values, compared with those at the last sale on January 28: .Jan. 28. March 1 d. d. d. d. OFFICIAL REPORT The Christchurch Woolbrokers' Association reports as follows: The third wool sale of the season was held in the Radiant Hall on Friday, March 1, when 25,000 bales were submitted at auction to a full attendance of buyers. The selection was an average one, with a large proportion of fine quality wools. The condition was heavier than at the earlier sales. A large proportion of the offering was more or less discoloured and yolk-stained. Very few super lots were included in the catalogues.

Competition was fairly general, but was not as animated, as at the earlier sales, and bidding was inclined to be erratic at times. The local mills, which set the price for the super lots St the previous sale, were very much quieter, having evidently filled that season's requirements. The main competition came from Bradford and France, Japan and Germany only beiag in the market for occasional lots. . As compared with last sale, halfbred and merinos were from a halfpenny w a penny easier, coarser wools showifls little change. Eighty-five per cent, of the offericP were sold at auction. , The following is the range ot prices:— „ ,/ Per lbd. A Merino, 64-70, 60-64 .« Extra super .. • • . ° « Supe- .. ..
