Allen, B.A, headmaster of the Wanganui Collegiate School has tendered his resignation, and'will retire at the end of the present year He has been a member of the teaching staff of the school for 23 years and headmaster since 1931. ' Mr H. Wansbrough, a solicitor of Bristol, is making a round trip'on the Tamaroa, which arrived at Auckland yesterday. Mr J. W. McEwen, foreign exchange operator on the Wellington branch of the Bank of New South Wales, has received notice of his promotion to chief clerk of the city division of the bank in Sydney. -He will leave for Sydney by the Wanganella on March 14. Mr A. Jeffs has been appointed electrical traction engineer to the Railway Department, and in this capacity will supervise the construction of the electric locomotives to be used on the new Tawa Flat line. Mr Jeffs has been associated prominently with other New Zealand railway electrification projects, notably the Otira tunnel. Mr I. C. Morrison arrived in Wellington from England this week. Formerly manager of exhibitions on the High Commissioner's staff in London, he was for many years manager and part proprietor of the "British Australian and New Zealander," pub/ished in London. For health reasons Mr Morrison will make New Zealand his permanent home. The following have been elected members of the Council of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce for the ensuing year:—Messrs. T. B. Gusscott, A. R. Hislop, J. Pearce Luke, M. G. C. McCaul, Charles W. Mack, J. T. Martin, J. H. Meyer, F. W. Millar, C. J. B. Norwood, P. E. Pattrick, A. Leslie Wall, and William M. Wright. The president and vice-president will be elected at the next meeting of the council of the chamber. Mr C. Hartly-Hodder, president of the Bristol Chamber of Commerce and Shipping, Incorporated, and a member of the Bristol Port Authority, arrived at Auckland yesterday by the Tamaroa. Mr HartlyHodder, who is accompanied by Mrs Hartly-Hodder, is making a round trip on the vessel for health reasons. Hutchison (Christchurch), G. S. Cray (Timaru), and M. Bethell (Culverden) as members of the Transport Licensing Authority for the No. 8 district was announced in last night's Gazette. The term of appointment is until February 23, 1936, and Mr Hutchison is to be chairman. The appointment of Dr. S. A. Gitibs (Nelson), Mr J. W. Hannan (Greymouth), and Mr E. Reid (Blenheim) as members of the Licensing Authority for the No. 7 district was also gazetted. Mr C. B. Hearn, of Melbourne, general manager of the Colonial Mutual Life Assurance Society, Ltd., arrived in Christchurch late yesterday afternoon from Dunedin. ' Mr Hearn, who came to New Zealand to attend the opening of the society's new building in Wellington a few days ago, is making a business tour of the Dominion. Last night he attended a staff dinner at the United Service Hotel, at which he is staying. He will leave Christchurch this evening by the inter-island steamer for Wellington, and will spend two days at Rotorua before leaving Auckland for Melbourne.

A passenger making the round trip on the Tamaroa which arrived at Auckland from Southampton yesterday is Lieutenant-General Sir F. W. N. McCracken, K.C.8., D.S.O. He is accompanied by his daughter, Miss C. McCracken. LieutenantGeneral McCracken commanded the Seventh Infantry Brigade from 19H to 1914, the Fifteenth Scottish Division in 1915, and an army corps from 1917 to 1918. From 1918 to 1919 M was commander-in-chief of the Scottish Command. He retired in 1W& General McCracken served in tne Egyptian campaign in 1882, at Suakin in 1885, and on the Egyptian frontier from 1885 to 1886. He also served throughout the campaign in South Africa, in which he received the D.5.0., and in the Great W«r from 1914 to 1918. In the last campaign he was mentioned in ens patches seven times, being nnaiiy promoted to the rank of lieutenantgeneral. He was created K-C-B. ■ m 1917.—"The Press" Special Service.
