BECKENHAM LIBRARY
MONTHLY MEETING OF COMMITTEE The February meeting of the Beckenham Library Committee was held recently, the chairman, Mr H. C. Campbell, presiding over a good attendance. It was reported that 88 new books had been placed on the shelves in the last few weeks. The demand for books it was stated, had been steady, the weekly issue during the last month having increased by 203 books. Five new subscribers had been enrolled in the last three weeks. Accounts amounting to £l2 12s 6d were passed for payment, leaving a balance in the current account of £l3 15s 4d. The usual monthly expenditure for the purchase of new books was authorised, and it was decided to recommence monthly payments into the contingencies fund. Mrs A. D. Cooper and Mr R. Milne were appointed to assist the buyers during the coming month. • The increased attendance of subscribers to the library was discussed, but it was considered that there was no difficulty in handling the traffic. The committee decided to commence the Saturday afternoon sessions on Saturday, April 6, and it was resolved that the hours be from 2.30 to 3.30, the same as on Wednesday afternoons. The secretary reported that the remainder of the 1934-1935 subsidy had been applied for, and it was decided that the amount should be spent in purchasing additional books during the winter period. It was decided that, in view of the success of the "500" card evenings last winter, an early start be made this year. The recent challenge card evening played against the local branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association had been very successful, and it was decided to offer a return match at an early date.
