CEREMONY OF LIGHT Her Excellency Lady Bledisloe, who is Dominion patroness of the League of Women Helpers of Toe H., visited the Toe H rooms in Gloucester street yesterday morning for the purpose of lighting and handing over to the branch a lamp of the Magnificat whicn she presented to the Christchureh branch of the League, and dedicated to the memory of Miss Eva Evans, the first member of the branch to pass away. . The lamp, which units are only allowed to possess when they attain branch status, had previously been lighted in England by her Royal Highness the Duchess of York at a lamp lighting festival, and had been brought out to New Zealand by a member of an English branch. Her Excellency, who was accompanied by Miss V. Hynes, was received at Toe H headquarters by Miss Gretchen Marsden. president of the branch, and Miss Frances L. Cooper, honorary secretary of the branch and representative on the Dominion executive and the Rev. Owen Williams, Dominion padre of the League of Women Helpers of Toe H. Her Excellency was ushered to her seat in the branch room, the lamp being on a small table in the centre of the room. In a brief address, Miss Marsden said that members were deeply grateful to her Excellency for her leadership in all that was good among, and for the women in New Zealand during her residence here, and in particular for all that she had done for the League of Women Helpers of Toe H, of which her gracious gift of the lamp was only one instance. "It will be our privilege to remember you and his Excellency in our prayers for your safe journey and happy homecoming," said Miss Marsden. . , In her reply, her Excellency .said that it gave "her great pleasure to be with members. She congratulated them on their advance since her last visit to the rooms, which had then been in Chester street, and was pleased that they now had such pleasant headquarters. She also expressed pleasure that members had attained the branch status and were able to have a lamp. She counselled members to "think fairly" and to "love widely." emphasising how much women could help towards the peace of the world by surrounding themselves with beautiful thoughts and extending to others the same kind judgment which they themselves expected. "Thoughts are living things which can encompass much," she added. Members then encircled the lamp, while her Excellency performed the brief but impressive ceremony, and alter the lighting of the lamp members stood for one minute in silence. After speaking to members individually, her Excellency signed the visitors' book and then inspected the headquarters.

ROTARY BALL

A feature of the annual conference of the fifty-third District Rotary, which is in session at Timaru this week, is the programme of entertainment provided for the visitors, culminating in the conference ball, which was held last night in the Caroline Bay hall, and which proved to be an outstanding social success. The blue and gold of Rotary, and widefringed streamers in tones of cyclamen and fuchsia festooned the hall, and hanging baskets of flowers and ferns illuminated with concealed lights were placed round the walls. The comfortably furnished lounge was used for bridge and was brightened with bowls of dahlias, and bowls of asters decorated the supper tables. Mrs C. R. Orr Walker was responsible for the decorations.

Mrs J. M. A. Ilott, wife of the district governor of Rotary, wore a trained frock of flame coloured moire, and Mrs F. I. MISS M. E. SIM HONOURED Miss M, E. Sim, who has resigned from the teaching staff of the Christchurch Girls' High School, of which she has been a member since 1913,.wi1l leave on March 9 for the North Island, where she intends to spend the first year of her retirement. Last night her fellow staff members held a farewell parly given in her honour at the Federation of University Women's Club rooms, which were effectively decorated for the occasion with.blue asters and greenery. The time passed pleasantly with card games and several interesting competitions. During the evening Miss P. M. P. Clark (principal) presented a silver teapot and cream jug to Miss Sim and extended to her the good wishes of all present. Miss Clark briefly outlined Miss Sim's teaching service at the Normal School in Dunedin, where she had been both a pupil and a teacher, and at the Christchureh Girls' High School. She also spoke of the good fellowship that had existed between Miss Sim and members of the staff and of her interest in everything connected with the welfare of the pupils. GRANT—HODGKINSON A quiet evening wedding was celebrated recently at St. Saviour's Church, Sydenham, when Emily May Hodgkinson, second daughter of the late Mr P. Ford, was married to Mr William Thomas Grant, second son of the late Mrs Grant and of Mr L. H. Grant (Okain's Bay, Banks Peninsula). The Rev. E. C. W. Powell performed the ceremony. The bride, who was given away by her uncle, Mr W. Ford (Aranui), wore a marocain frock patterned in blue and white, and a wide-brimmed hat of white straw. Mrs H. Rayner, the bridegroom's sister, who acted as matron of honour, wore a brown floral crepe de chine frock, and a small brown straw hat. Mr Peter Grant attended his brother as best man. EARNSHAW—MURDOCH The wedding was celebrated recently at the Sacred Heart Church, Addington, of Agnes May (Molly), elder daughter of Mr and Mrs J. L. Murdoch, of *'Benhar," Balclutha, Otago, to Sydney Thomas Henry, second son of Mrs R. Washington (Spreydon), and of the late Mr Thomas Earnshaw (Prebbleton). The Rev. COX—PRIME White flowers decorated St. Luke's Church, Manchester street, on Wednesday, for the marriage of Mary Nathaleen, third daughter of Mrs Prime, Christchurch, to Albert, son of the late Mrs W. M. Cox, and of Mr Cox, Christchurch. The Rev. F. N. Taylor performed the ceremony, and Mr Arthur Lilley was organist. The bride wore a frock of cream chenille velvet relieved with silver lame, the long sleeves being cowled at the shoulders and fitted tightly to the wrists. The bodice was finished with ruching from the neckline to the waist at the back, and the skirt was fully flared from the kneeline. Orange blossom held in place her embroidered tulle veil, and she carried a shower bouquet of white begonias and maidenhair fern. Mr R. Thompson escorted the bride who was attended by Mrs A. Duggan as matron of honour, and Miss Peggy Braid as bridesmaid. Mrs TDuggan's frock of begonia pink crepe marocain was made with a slight train slashed at the hemline, the off shoulder neckline being finished with blue and silver lame flowers. Her hat was of silver lame, and she carried pastelshaded flowers. Miss Braid's frock of turquoise blue silk marocain was made on similar lines to the frock worn by the matron of honour, and she wore also a hat to tone, and carried flowers in pastel shades. Mr R. Mitchell was best man, and Mr George Prime acted a groomsman. A reception and dance were held in the Jellicoe Hall.

The bride's mother wore a black marocain frock and a hat to match, and carried a bouquet of red roses. Miss L. Cox, the bridegroom's sister, wore a red windswept velvet frock and a red hat. Her bouquet was composed of red carnations and roses. The bride travelled in a bottle-green ensemble and a hat to tone. SHERRARD—M'KEE , The wedding was celebrated recently at the Sumner Presbyterian Church, of Miss Bertha McKee, daughter of the late Mr McKee, and of Mrs McKee, of Belfast, Ireland, to Charles, only son of Mrs Sherrard, and of the late Mr Alexander Sherrard, of "Bruslee," Ballyclare, County Antrim, Ireland. The Rev. W. Rutland Martin performed the ceremony, and Mr A. Wilson was organist.

The bride, who arrived in New Zealand recently by the Remuera, was escorted by Mr S. Sherrard. She wore a cream silk linen tweed frock, trimmed with diagonal tucking, and made with a high neck-line, and a threequarter length coat to match. Her hat was of fine cream straw, and she carried a bouquet of orange and lemon shaded abutilons and begonias. Miss Eileen Sherrard, the bridegroom's sister, who acted as bridesmaid, wore a frock of delphinium blue silk with white diagonal pin stripes, and a blue angora felt hat. She carried a posy of lemon-shaded flowers. Mr William Smyth, the bridegroom's nephew, acted as best man. Mrs A. Sherrard received the guests in the Sunday School hall, and she was wearing a black silk crepe frock relieved with grey, and a coat and hat to match. Her bouquet was composed of deep mauve asters. Mrs Smythe, the bridegoom's sister, wore a cocoa-brown frock relieved with beige, a brown coat, and a fawn hat trimmed with brown ribbon.

The bride travelled in a green floral frock, a green coat, and a small hat to match. NEILSON— KIDD The marriage of Margaret, second daughter of Mr and Mrs. D. Kidd, Atarau, to Leslie David, son of the late Mrs Neilson, and of Mr W. Neilson, Blackball, was celebrated recently by the Rev. Father O'Meeghan, at the Catholic Church, Blackball. Miss L. Campbell was the organist, and Mr J. Duffy sang, "Ave Maria" during the signing of the register. Miss Mollie Kidd attended her sister as bridesmaid, and Mr R. Neilson was best man. A reception was held at the home of the bride's parents. Mr and Mrs L. D. Neilson left later for Christchurch.

TENNIS PLAYERS ENTERTAINED

After a friendly tennis match played at Hawarden, members of the Kaikoura tennis team were entertained at a party held at the home of Mr and Mrs J. D. Sprosen, "Horsley Downs," Hawarden. Competitions were held, and Mr J. L. Feek gave several entertaining items, Music for dancing was supplied by Miss M. Wareham (Kaikoura), Messrs J. Anderson (Kaikoura), F. M. Wright and H. Piercy.
