CLOCK TOWER AT NEW BRIGHTON
* WORK TO BE FINISHED BY APRIL 6 TENDER FOR COMPLETION ADOPTED More than £2OO of the £4OO given by Mr. R. E. Green towards the building of a clock tower at New Brighton has so far been used, and in this amount is included wages, expenses, commitments, and the proportion of the cost of supervision and lawyers' fees. Reporting to a special meeting of the New Brighton Borough Council last evening, the Mayor (Mr E. A. M. Leaver), who presided, said that; it was hoped that a refund of part of the wages would be obtained from the Unemployment Board, as relief workers were being engaged on the work. The meeting was called to discuss the report of a sub-committee set up to consider the tenders called for the completion of the work. Besides the Mayor there were present Crs. A. E. Lawry, J. Orsborn, W. L. A. Taylor, T. E. Thomson, W. Hulme, R. E. Holloway, W. E. Wilkins, and J. S. Ainsworth. The architect, Mr B. J. Ager, was present at the request of the subcommittee, which consisted of the Mayor and Crs". Holloway, Wilkins, and Ainsworth. The five tenders received were discussed in committee, but in open council it was decided to accept the tender of the Coalyn Importing and Construction Company, Ltd. This was the lowest tender, and its adoption
was moved by Cr. Hollo way., That the work should be started immediately and should be completed by April 6 were further conditions recommended by the sub-committee to be binding on the firm granted the tender. The report of the sub-committee was adopted, and its members were given power to make all arrangements for the resolution to be carried out immediately.
