ENORMOUS SUM CLAIMED
INDIAN LANDOWNER BRINGS SUIT DEBT OF SIX BILLION POUNDS ALLEGED (UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION—BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH—COrYEIGHT.) (Received February 26, 10.20 p.m.) CALCUTTA, February 26.
An amazing claim fcr six billion pounds sterling has been made against the Maharaja of Rewa, one of the ruling Princes of Central India, by Lala Ganga Prasad Singh, a landowner in the State. The claim is based on the allegation that about 150 years ago the Maharaja Ajay Singh, great-great-grandfather of the present Maharaja, borrowed £ 10,750 from the claimant's great-great-grandfather, for which he executed a bond. It is claimed that the money was never repaid, and that the original debt, together with the interest, has reached the enormous sum now claimed. The claimant bases his suit on the laws of the State of Rewa, where the time limitation does not apply in cases brought for the recovery of arrears from State subjects. The claimant lias asked the Government of the State to permit him to institute a civil suit against the Maharaja in the State courts for the recovery of the money.
